We have all survived the night and are doing better than expected. There are about 27 hours left to go in this bitter polar vortex storm. This morning it was -25 F (-31 C) outside but +6 F (-14 C) in the barn. (Real temp, not wind chill temp.) We hung up some of our safety heat lamps that we used to use for lambing so the sheep could go under them to warm up a bit, especially the old ones. (The sheep with the eye spots is Sparky who will be 15 at the end of March.)

Thinking about making a purchase? Sometimes it's difficult to buy something sight unseen. We understand that. And we want our customers to be thrilled with their wool. Your satisfaction is guaranteed!

OUR "NO QUIBBLING" RETURNS POLICY:
Wool and fleece are unique and natural products from real animals that live outdoors. The wool that is perfect for a scarf, may not be so perfect for boot socks. We try very hard to provide a quality product and to provide an honest description of it.

When you receive your purchase, please remove it from its box and bag and thoroughly examine it. If for some reason, you have made a firm decision that you are not satisfied with your purchase, please email us. Then put it back in the box and mail it back. When your return is received, you will receive a full refund. We ask that if you do decide you would like to return an order, that you do within two weeks of purchase.

Etsy.com is running a special and today is the last day. It is spend $25 and get $15 in Etsy credit. Here's how it works. If you make a purchase over $25, there will be a promo code in your email that you can use for $5 off each of your next three purchases anywhere on Etsy.

Now that autumn is finally here, it's the perfect time to dust off your spinning wheel and make something cozy. We have 4 colors of pin-drafted roving in stock and natural black regular roving. (I think the black would make some awesome felted slippers!) Our Etsy shop is at https://www.etsy.com/shop/FireflyFieldsFinns or just use the "shop" button on this page.

If you would like a custom order, such as one bump of grey and one bump of white, just send me a FB message or Etsy Convo and I'll set up special listing for you.

Question for you -- Answer in the comments! What was the first handicraft that you learned and how old were you?

Here's mine:
I am from a family of crocheters. My grandmother, great aunt and great grandmother, all crocheted beautiful lace things. My mother could crochet too, but not at the level of the others. I learned to crochet starting in 2nd grade... so about age 7.

I entered projects in the 4H Fair for crochet two years. The first year, I made a kitchen towel with a crochet thread hanger at the top. The following year, I crocheted a doily, which I will always remember, has a mistake in it somewhere. My great-aunt really wanted me to rip it out but I refused. I always had problems with tension in crochet. Amazingly, I learned to knit at around age 25 and had very even tension from the start. Weird, huh? (Attached is a photo of that 4H Fair doily. Sorry it isn't blocked.)

Here is an article on Finnsheep in Countryside Magazine. Jill Christensen of Stentorp Farm in Finland visited some Finnsheep farms on the east and west coasts of the U.S. last summer, while here to visit family members.

I visited Stentorp, which specializes in brown Finnsheep in July 2008. Jill's sheep are even more beautiful in person! We have some descendants of Jill's ram "Platon" in our flock.

An ancient variety, Finnsheep produce both meat and wool. Finnish sheep characteristics have been bred for thousands of years.

I'll take some prettier photos and list them in our Etsy shop tomorrow, but here is a sneak peek of our new pindrafted roving. Two new colors. 100% Finn wool. All natural colors (no dyes). (Photos below in comments.)

I'm going to pick up some roving made from our Finnsheep wool at Round Barn Fiber Mill tomorrow. I think it's bumps of pindrafted roving, but I can't remember what colors I sent them! They have gotten really popular and lead time is about 6 months now. I'll post a photo!
