Summerfield Herb Farm - Afton, TN

Summerfield Herb Farm - Afton, TN On our farm in Greene County, Tennessee, we raise culinary and medicinal herbs. Find us at the Depot Specializing in herbs, perennials and native plants.

Our little farm is nestled in the hills of East Tennessee on land that has been farmed for over 100 years. Although we never knew them, we feel a strong kinship with the family that started this farm all those years ago. We are striving to live in much the same way that they must have: raising our own food and making a living from the farm while caring for the land.

GOLDENROD vs RAGWEED

Did you know that GOLDENROD does not cause allergies? GOLDENROD and RAGWEED are 2 plants that have forever been confused. They grow at the same time of the year, and that is the only similarity. They do come from the same Asteraceae family, but so do sunflowers, daisies, and artichokes. Each has different shaped leaves. Ragweed flowers are green and nondescript. Goldenrod has a striking pretty golden color. Ragweed is pollinated through the air, which is why it is such an allergen. The pollen can travel hundreds of miles. Goldenrod is not the cause of allergic reactions because it is pollenated by insects and not by the wind. It is not responsible for the allergens in the air. The goldenrod plant is actually used for a variety of medicinal uses. Some species are even deliberately cultivated for some of its beneficial properties. This time of year the bees are happily harvesting it and making an abundance of very desirable honey from it. This time of year also yields abundant amounts of ragweed and causes most of the allergic reactions of any flora that grows throughout the country.

Did you know? We must plant more sunflowers this year!

Sunflowers have long been the national flower of the Ukraine, but in 1996 they were also chosen as a symbol of world peace, and a world free of nuclear weapons.

This event took place when Ukraine gave up its last nuclear warhead on a former Ukraine missile base, on June 4th 1996.

The US, Russia, and Ukraine were all present at this event, and the then Secretary of US Defence, William Perry, said, “Sunflowers instead of missiles in the soil will ensure peace for future generations.”

They celebrated by scattering and planting sunflower seeds on the site, and also at nuclear disaster sites throughout the world…Fukushima, Chernobyl, Hiroshima…..

May those scattered sunflower seeds be remembered today, and their message bloom in the hearts of all, bringing about the changes needed to restore peace once again to the Ukraine and her people.

One of my favorite herbs!
07/11/2021

One of my favorite herbs!

Soapwort contains a chemical constituent called saponin which will lather like soap when you add water to a handful of flowers and rub your hands together. Try it with kids as a fun way to wash up after working in the garden. Historically, it was used for washing hands and fabric, and it's other common name, bouncing Bet, refers to it's use by a washer-woman or "Betty". I have also seen an 18th century painting with soapwort growing and floating in a basin by the door of a privy for hand washing. Are you are among the people who don't like cilantro because you think it tastes soapy? That's because it shares the same chemical which enables soapwort to lather!
It can spread quickly, so I prefer planting it along fences or walls where it can run free for the bees and hummingbirds that enjoy it.

The Incredible Farm Dinner Downtown from Rural Resources was a hit! The location was dreamy (the trees! the church!), and the food was so delicious. I especially loved the trout from English Mountain Trout Farm & Grill and the pickled crookneck and spaghetti squash atop the pork!

I keep meaning to post some pictures of my lovely plants purchased at your spring plant sale. I will do that soon. But right now I have a question. A friend is looking for black cherry tomato seeds. Will you have those available for next spring perhaps?
