Farfields Farm

Farfields Farm We work to rebuild our health and the health of our ecosystem through our agriculture; we produce organic veggies, eggs, pastured beef, and medicinal plants.

Farfields Farm and Nursery is an agroecological farmstead project that aims to serve our community with nourishing food and nursery plants while building soil and fostering the health of the ecosystems within which we are embedded. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Afton, our farm is home to a native plant nursery, pastured laying hens, vegetable and medicinal gardens, mushroom logs, ponds, woodlands, and wildlife. Our agro-forestry efforts include an organic, log-grown shiitake mushroom yard, as well as a multitude of wild-simulated plantings, including Reishi mushrooms.

"The wolf was so close now.. Approaching the place where the edge of the forest met the open meadow, I paused before stepping out from the shadows of the trees. The sun was directly overhead. In that moment I stood frozen in my tracks next to the fresh footprint of the wolf that had led me here. I was sharing this trail with the wolf and I did not want the moment to end. I wanted that wolf to be with me forever."
-Chapter Seven, "Pack" from Dawn Again by Doniga Markegard

We have an exciting visitor coming May 6th!

With much help from the folks at Center for Urban Habitats, we started constructing a Piedmont Mafic Barren demonstration garden yesterday. We carefully positioned these enormous rocks to mimic the landscape, and create the ideal habitat for hardy native plants that thrive in the severely harsh conditions of the Piedmont Mafic Barren. Updates to come!

Nuts in the kitchen: Acornucopia Project envisions an edible future for WNC

If you're a local nut forager or farmer, you might be interested in what Bill Whipple is doing down in Asheville, NC.

"Acornucopia spent the latter part of 2017 processing thousands of pounds of native black walnuts, chestnuts, hickory nuts and acorns into flour, oil, nut milk and nut meats. The project relies on community members throughout the region to collect fresh nuts and deliver them to the Nuttery in trade for money or processed nuts."

This article below explains what Acornucopia is all about, and how folks down in Western North Carolina are taking advantage!

Bill is coming to the farm next week to talk more about this project, the resiliency of perennial agriculture, and the specifics of nut farming and foraging. Come out and see us!

A network of local chefs, bakers and food artisans is working with the regional collective to develop innovative culinary uses for WNC's native tree nuts.
