Pacific Edge in Campbeltown!

SPRINGBANK WHISKY SCHOOL - TERM 8

We can hardly believe that the final week of the Whisky School 2015 has passed. The weeks flew by and we’re sad that it’s all over for another year.

The last week saw four students from the USA; Eli, Kenny, Scott & Rich plus Ranald from our Sales Team and Cameron, who is a fairly new member of our Campbeltown Whisky Shop.

Again hard working pupils and staff who willingly did everything that was asked of them. They did have a wee “sleep in” one morning - apart from Eli who turned up at the correct time (I think they had been out the night before).

During the filling on Tuesday there was a problem with a bung which had to be removed. Unfortunately it was stuck and Cameron was asked to go and get a wood magnet to get it out, to which he replied “Where is the wood magnet kept?” Suffice to say he was presented with a wooden bung on Friday inscribed “Wood Magnet”.

The week ended as usual with their exam, presentation and buffet lunch followed by the announcement of the pupil of the week. Again this week Gavin awarded all of the pupils a wee bottle from the tasting room casks. A great note to end the Whisky School of 2015.

We recently had an opportunity to revisit a package we designed about 10+ years ago. When the opportunity presents itself it is always beneficial to use the skills and technology that have improved over the years to enhance a previous project. With Tres Manos by Pacific Edge Wine & Spirits we applied some subtle improvements using an improved gold color build on foil paper, deeper embossing, and the addition of a flood gloss UV with a strategic use of a spot matt UV to enhance the 3 hands (tres manos). This tequila is special so the package needs to reflect that and the finished product is spectacular!

The packaging for our Longrow 18 year old has recently been redesigned and now fits in nicely with the Longrow Peated and Longrow Red whiskies. The new version is available now and just to tempt your tastebuds, here are the tasting notes for the newest batch:

Nose: A very complex nose on this one. Sweet fruits; citrus, peaches and orange zest at first, with a gentle, peaty earthy aroma reminiscent of dunnage warehouses emerging later.

Palate: Rich and very, very tasty. Great balance. Dark chocolate, creamy coffee and gingerbread to the fore, followed by rhubarb and vanilla custard.

Finish: Long and sweet, a hint of typical Longrow peat smoke combined with more chocolate and some dried fruits.

The Hanky Panky Cocktail.

Well as it is Valentines day we thought it was only appropriate to have some Hanky Panky! This cocktail was invented in 1925 by Ada Coleman, head bartender at the American Bar in The Savoy.

Here is our take on it:

45ml Old Raj Gin
35ml Sweet Vermouth - we used Dolin
2 Dashes of Fernet Branca

Stir over ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with a strip of orange peel. Couldn't be simpler!

Colour: Golden Syrup

Nose: An infusion of chocolate, honeycomb and dried fruit combine well with a malty undertone, before a rich creaminess develops.

Palate: Elegant yet complex with a combination of spices, sweeter candy notes, butterscotch, marzipan and sugared almonds. A rich oily texture is derived from its maturation in small casks, giving the impression of a maturity beyond its 10 years.

Finish: Long, robust and medium dry. An earthy oakiness is infused with sweet salty notes which go on and on.

1.5oz- Johnny Drum Private Stock 101 Proof Bourbon
.5oz- Willett Distillery RYE
1oz- Giulio Cocchi Vermouth di Torino
1 dropper- Bittercube Cherry Bark Vanilla Bitters

In California, where bars and restaurants are struggling due to strict guidelines, you can now purchase these kits at Costco and create your favorite cocktails at home! This sturdy box is imprinted with an organic pattern and then embellished with a custom die cut wrap. We captured the Italian heritage of this classic cocktail with exceptional design and photography. If you're in California be sure to stop by Costco and pick one up before they are all gone! Keep an eye out for the Manhattan kits which are coming very soon.
Just waiting for some live samples of this recently designed and finished package for Pacific Edge Wine & Spirits – a 10yr old Extra Anejo Tequila bottled at 84 Proof which is probably going to taste almost as good as the package looks!
