I spent decades assuming this was one of those fussy tropicals best left to the professionals in warmer postcodes. We’ve all bought a stalk for a stir-fry and chucked the woody end straight into the compost bin. Turns out, that’s a bit of a waste. If you take that exact grocery store stalk and do one ridiculously simple thing, you’ll have a permanent, thriving supply of the stuff. Best of all, it entirely ignores the fact that we don’t live in a tropical climate—provided you know the one simple trick to get it through the colder months. As a bonus, keeping a pot of it near the back door does a rather brilliant job of keeping a very specific pest away while you sit out with a cup of tea. Have a read of the method below. Your starter plant is probably sitting in the fridge right now.
