While “farm to table” meals and “farm fresh” produce is glorified, the actual people behind the products we eat are often forgotten. We don’t ever want to forget the people behind the food on our plate, because they matter so much and without them, we have nothing.

This January, Perlito retired from Sumida Farm and we truly don’t know how to put into words how much we are going to miss him. He provided strength and stability for our whole team, and it is hard to imagine our farm without him at the center of it.

Perlito started at Sumida Farm 13 years ago when he retired from another job. Imagine retiring from one job only to work harder at your retirement job! He cares about people and cares about the work he produces. Sumida Farm is a better place because Perlito was a part of it.

Thank you, Perlito, for your 13 years of service to not just Sumida Farm, but to Hawai’i. Thanks to your hard work and dedication, we were able to nourish the islands with fresh watercress and care for the ‘āina. The work you did matters, and your legacy will live on as we do our best to continue the work without you. We are so grateful you brought your son Christopher to join our farm team too. May you have a restful and peaceful retirement and know that you will forever be a part of the story of this farm and the ‘āina. 💚

David Beano Sumida loved to cook and loved to cook with Sumida Farm watercress. His simple, yet ‘ono dishes were family favorites. One of his favorite recipes that he often shared with others was his Kalua Pork Watercress with Hoisin Sauce.

"It was so spontaneous how kalua pork and watercress came to be. In the kitchen, I wanted to come up with a variation of my mom's corned beef and watercress. My fridge had a tub of Ono Ono Brand kalua pork so I started with that. I added 1/2 local onion cut pole to pole. I wanted a different flavor rather than using shoyu and oyster sauce so I added hoisin sauce which makes the pork taste like Moo Shu pork! Next came chopped watercress and plenty of fresh ground pepper, and there it was... kalua pork and watercress with onions and hoisin sauce. A winner!" - David Sumida

We miss Uncle Dave dearly, but are happy his memory can live on through his stories and his food. For the recipe click on the link in bio or visit our blog. 💚

🥟 Dumplings are a beloved comfort food across the globe and here at Sumida Farm we’re putting a fresh, local spin on this timeless classic. Traditionally made with pork and chives, we’ve swapped in our farm-fresh watercress to give these dumplings a deliciously unique flavor with a bit of extra crunch.

🎨 Here at Sumida Farm we love to highlight the creators and artists inspired by our fields of watercress.

🤙🏽 Meet Noelle also known as .designs

Noelle grew up in Kaneohe surrounded by the majestic and grandiose Ko’olau mountains. A graduate of Kamehameha Schools she fell in love with jewelry making after taking a Creative Metals and Arts course that sparked her desire to create wearable art. She began making jewelry of her own in 2017 utilizing ferns and crystals in resin. Noelle enjoys using unique mediums such as uncommon botanicals, kalo, and most recently Sumida Farm watercress in her jewelry!

Noelle was surprised by how expansive our farm is along with all of the micro-ecosystems found here at Sumida Farm. To see other native plants such as kalo and pohinahina growing on the farm was really exciting to her.

When not foraging on our farm, she enjoys eating our watercress in soup. She most recently tried our pressure cooker pork watercress soup recipe (found on our website) and said it came out perfect!

Mahalo nui loa Noelle for thinking of our farm as a place for inspiration and our watercress as a component of your beautiful creations. Please make sure to follow .designs to see and learn more about her beautiful jewelry. 💎
