Newest intakes. Three young opossums. Here's to hoping they take to lapping for feeding pretty quickly and we don't have to tube feed. So far they seem in good health.

It's rehab release day! 3 of the 4 squirrels we've been raising have been soft- released this morning. One won't leave the porch while others won't leave our side at our designated backyard release site near said porch.

These pictures right here capture why I love homeschooling. Of the three kids, my youngest is the most passionate about animals and loves to assist where she can. From kidding to bottle feeding, she is there to be my gopher and extra set of hands and is learning so much in the process beyond textbook academics. Homesteading/farming and some light wildlife rehab have been great outlets for her and have further cultivated her love of animals, both domestic and wildlife (exotic and not).

I love teaching my children how to respect our animals, especially wildlife, and how to love animals while respecting their boundaries. The sweet moments captured here between a set of young squirrels and my daughter who has helped me bottle feed, bathe, and swaddle them, clean their cage, change their bedding and enrichment gear represents her understanding and acceptance that this moment is yet another fleeting moment of hopefully many more to come. This is because success in rehab ideally means these animals "wild up" and become increasingly less willing to be around us until one day they stop coming down from the trees to see us altogether. It is both a sad and happy moment; one that my daughter understands far better than she realizes as a young rehabber.

Never a dull moment. Seriously, Daffodil?! On top of the hay bale?!

Guess what? Suki, Ell-Tee, and Echo's UKC registration paperwork just arrived! It feels so good to look at their pedigrees and see names of reputable overseas breeders of such high quality dogs. I like knowing that the dogs we have working on our farm come from solid genetics rooted in tradition.

We have 2 males and 1 female available, both siblings to Ell-Tee and Echo and offspring of Suki and Sarge.

Homesteading/farming is a mixed bag of "lose some/win some". Despite best efforts to provide the best environment for the best outcome sometimes things don't go as planned. However, in between the moments of struggle there are moments when you just look out at your livestock and see the positive results of your hard work which are sometimes hard to recognize when you see the same animals day after day.

Today was one of those days when I stepped back and looked over my does and was able to appreciate their health and body condition individually and as a group. These girls all look healthy and plump, bright eyed, and happy and that makes me happy.

It has been fun watching Pippi bloom from the cautious closed off goat she was when I first got her to a doe who is very talkative and affectionate. I'm also very impressed with how well she kept condition during pregnancy and regained condition post-kidding. She's petty "fluffy" these days still milking but working to dry off. She has a lopsided udder so by no means has a perfect show udder but she milks out so fast and easy, produces alot of milk and her teats are so wonderfully easy to hand milk. I've retained her two doelings from this year's kidding season and am eager to see how they look and produce as they get older.

Nan is not as "in-your-pocket" as Marylin, Sapphire, or Pippi but she is by no means a cold goat. She is just an independent gal. Look how good her condition is! She didn't settle this breeding season so I hope to have success this year because I'm eager to see how milks out and what she produces.

Sapphire is in competition with Marylin for the place as my favorite Nubian. She is so sweet and im really liking her body condition since I've had her. She did not settle last breeding season so she didn't kid for me this year. I intend to use CIDR for this year's breeding season for all my girls so I hope she settles. I'm eager to see what she produces and how she milks out.
