While standard chickens pack four toes per foot, some special birds strut around with five. Here is the lowdown on why that extra toe pops up:
🎨 1. It’s a Family Trait (Purebreds!) 👑
There are five main breeds where a fifth toe is completely standard and written right into their DNA. If you have Silkies, Faverolles, Dorkings, Houdans, or Sultans, they are supposed to have that extra little piggy! 🐷✨
🌳 2. A Hidden Branch on the Family Tree (Mixes!) 🍃
Don't have a purebred? That extra toe gene is actually genetically dominant! That means if your chicken has just one ancestor down the line (like a Silkie cross) who passed the gene along, it can easily pop up in future generations.
