🦶✨ Well, lookie here... someone’s sporting a little something extra! ✨🦶
Have you ever looked down at your flock and noticed one of your birds has a bonus digit? 🐔🤔 If you've spotted an extra toe on your chickens, you aren't seeing things—you're looking at a classic case of polydactyly! 🧬🧬
While standard chickens pack four toes per foot, some special birds strut around with five. Here is the lowdown on why that extra toe pops up:
🎨 1. It’s a Family Trait (Purebreds!) 👑
There are five main breeds where a fifth toe is completely standard and written right into their DNA. If you have Silkies, Faverolles, Dorkings, Houdans, or Sultans, they are supposed to have that extra little piggy! 🐷✨
🌳 2. A Hidden Branch on the Family Tree (Mixes!) 🍃
Don't have a purebred? That extra toe gene is actually genetically dominant! That means if your chicken has just one ancestor down the line (like a Silkie cross) who passed the gene along, it can easily pop up in future generations. It's an incredibly common—and adorable—surprise to see show up in backyard flocks and colorful egg-laying crosses! 🥚🌈
💚 Is it a problem? 💚
Not even a little bit! As long as the nail grows straight and they are walking around comfortably, it's completely harmless. It just gives them a little extra character (and maybe a tiny bit of bonus traction for scratching up the yard)! 🌾🐓
Do any of your birds have a bonus toe? Drop a picture of your multi-toed beauties in the comments! 👇👇👇

🐥🐔 This lovely lady has a couple black spots on her. Her name is ⚫ Spot ⚫. I had to talk him out of naming her RJ, seeing as we already have a quail named RJ. Lol

📣📣 We have named this beaty Orn! 🦅✨

As you can see, she’s the one looking right at the camera in the first picture, with that absolute powerhouse stare. We named her Orn because she looks exactly like a miniature eagle—and ǫrn happens to be the Old Norse word for eagle.
She might be a chicken, but she definitely has the spirit of a Viking raptor. 🐓🛡️

🌱 Community, Mentorship, and New Beginnings at Freya's Grove! 🌱

They say it takes a village, but when it comes to building a homestead from the ground up, having incredible mentors makes all the difference. Today, we want to give a massive, heartfelt shout-out to Woodard Family Farms, LLC !

When we first started envisioning Freya’s Grove, we knew we had a lot to learn. The amazing folks at Woodard Family Farms didn't just offer advice—they rolled up their sleeves and helped us bring this dream to life.
Because of their generosity and expertise, we've been able to take some huge leaps forward:

* **The Coop:** They jumped right in and helped build our secure, sturdy chicken coop.

* **The Flock:** They gave us access to their own amazing chickens to help us start our flock on the right foot.

* **The Quail:** They connected us with a fantastic local lady to finally set up our quail operation.

* **The Garden:** They’ve even shared seeds to help get our gardens growing!

More than anything, they are helping us learn exactly what it takes to build a happy, thriving homestead. We are endlessly grateful for their guidance, their hands-on help, and their friendship.
If you aren't already following their journey, please head over and show some love to Woodard Family Farms. Community is everything! 🌾✨

🚨 WE HAVE A NAME! 🚨

Meet the ultimate escape artist featured here... everyone, say hello to **Rogue**! 🐔🔴💨

This adventurous little lady earned her name by being the absolute *first* one to break bounds and make a run for it out of the chicken run! 🏃‍♀️💨 Standard chicken wire just can't hold back this level of curiosity. 🕵️‍♀️🌾

She’s fast, she’s fiery, and she clearly makes her own rules! 🔥🐾

Welcome to the flock officially, Rouge! 🐣✨ Show her some love in the comments below! 👇❤️

🥚 One Step Closer: The Egg License is HERE! 🥚
Look what finally arrived in the mail today! 📄✨

We are officially, legally licensed to sell our farm-fresh eggs! It is an amazing feeling to have that official stamp of approval after all the hard work that goes into keeping our birds happy and healthy.

So, what’s next?

While the paperwork is officially sorted, we are currently playing the waiting game for our quail to start producing enough to keep up with demand! Beautiful, nutrient-dense, and perfectly speckled quail eggs are officially on the horizon.

We are so excited to bring these tiny packages of farm-fresh goodness to our local community very soon.

Keep an eye on our page for the official launch date, or send us a DM if you want to be the first on the list when the first cartons are ready to roll! 🌾✨

little sneak peek of this year's harvest! 🌽🍅🌶️

While I won't have quite enough produce to sell this season, consider this a highly delicious test run. This corn, cherry tomatoes, and peppers are going straight to our dinner plates! 😋

I'm taking notes, learning the ropes, and getting ready to scale up. Next year is going to be the big one—stay tuned! 🌱✨

Exciting news from the homestead! 🌾✨

We have some new feathered additions settling in at Freya's Grove, and that means fresh, farm-raised quail eggs are officially on the horizon! 🥚✨

If you’ve never tried quail eggs, you are in for an absolute treat. Take a look at the graphic to see why these little speckled gems are considered a true homestead superfood!

Here is why you'll want to reserve a carton once our flock starts laying:

Nutritional Powerhouses: Gram for gram, these compact eggs offer more vitamins and essential nutrients than standard chicken eggs.

Rich & Creamy Flavor: They have a larger yolk-to-white ratio, making them incredibly rich, creamy, and perfect for gourmet dishes or leveling up your morning breakfast.

Allergy-Friendly: Quail eggs are high in Ovomucoid, a specific protein that can be a fantastic, gentle alternative for some allergy sufferers.

The Perfect Bite-Sized Snack: They are the ideal size for hard-boiling, adding to fresh salads, making fun appetizers, or packing as healthy snacks for the kids!

Our new quail are settling in beautifully and will be ready to start laying in just a matter of weeks. 🤎

📥 Want to be first on the list when our fresh eggs hit the market? Drop a comment below or send us a message so we can make sure you get a taste of the very first harvests!
