☀️ 🐥 It’s Moving Day! 📦 🛻

30 birds are making their way from the brooder room to the wild outdoors. The crazy coop is always stop #2 before their final chicken shuffle in their forever coops.

🐓 Bantam New Hampshires, Legbars, and Rainbow Egg layers make up the 30 that will now have more room to roam, fresh outside air, and dirt to dust bathe in. 🥰

🗓️ This week I have my work cut out for me in banding 20+ Brown Legborns with a sprinkle of pure Legbar and my new favorite colored egg layer cross. 🤫 I’ll post a pic of that variety soon! 🤐

I love beautiful crisp summer mornings like these. And this girl, she is our one of a kind “experience”. I say it often, but it’s true. Everyone should experience a Great Dane companion at least once in their life.

🐶 She is quiet, calm, and easy going but still so full of personality and absolutely LOVES, love!

⭐️ And no, she isn’t sitting here to protect me, she’s sitting this close for me to protect her, from whatever she smells in the woods 🤭

📣 It’s Time …… ⏰

You all knew this was coming…. but none of us knew quite when, and you’re never really ready for “the last one”

We have officially 🛑 STOPPED 🛑 hatching for the season!!!!

I pulled out my calendar 🗓 yesterday (color coded and highlighted) and it’s FULL for the summer! ☀️ Between sports, jobs, lake days, 🏖 classes, appointments and family I just don’t have enough time in the day. ⏰

Tomorrow my small little hatch of buffs will end the season! 🙈 🐣 If you haven’t ordered chicks or laying hens yet, and want to get in on some Cochins, Leghorns or Colored Egg Layers please msg us right away!! 📧 There may be extra pullets available, or adult Cochins in another month or so. It’s been a wild season for sure! Thank you all for your support!! Looking forward to working with you again (soon).

October will be here before we know it and another hatching season will start again then 🐣 . I’m the meantime, I will be enjoying fair season with all of our 4-H families, watching our growouts, 🐥 answering messages 📧 from you all, and spending quality time with family. ☀️ 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

🍀 💚 Let’s talk about feed and feeders

There are studies that have shown that chickens pick at their food and select by size, where they eat the biggest pieces first, they then scratch around through the powder and smaller crumble for the rest of the big pieces discarding what they don’t want all over your coop floor.

Big gain has maintained a uniform crumble size and nutritionally they are the superior option for the breeds we raise (our opinion of course) 😊

📸 Another factor to consider is feeder placement. Too low and they scratch it all out; too high and they don’t get enough to eat. You also need to ensure you have enough feeders and waterers available to your birds for the number of birds you have in one space. They should all be able to gather around comfortably. If they can’t, someone will be deemed as the runt or the weak link and will be excluded from the dinner table. This truly goes for all stages of life from day old chicks to the geriatric birds in your flock 😉

⭐️ Why is this important to you?

Because a quality show prospect doesn’t start in conditioning. It starts from day 1 with quality nutrition, clean water, good husbandry and ample space.

☀️ Summer Fun ….

Is right around the corner for us! The first day of summer looks BEAUTIFUL 🤩 I can’t believe it’s already the end of the school year. 3 more days! 🙌🏻

📝 Time to make our summer bucket list! We will be busy, but it’s the good kind of busy. Summer nights at the ball field. Evenings at the lake, stormy nights listening to the frogs and the thunder roll, summer bike rides (can’t wait to see how far the kids make it this year), fair fun, crisp evenings by the fire, late night stories and early morning coffee in the gazebo. Making memories with friends and family.

🥰 📸 These are the days I treasure most.

You get a slap from reality when you put it in perspective. Our kids are 9 and (almost) 11. That means I have 9 more summers left with one and 7 left with the other. Before you know it they will be driving and out the door more than they are home so reality it maybe 6 and 4 summers left…. we make every day, every experience and ever memory count!

🏫 📕 ✏️ 📆 So far we have the shortest school year of anyone I know. We are out the Friday before Memorial Day and don’t go back till the Thursday after Labor Day.

💬 ⬇️ How many more days till your littles are out for summer? What’s on your summer bucket list? I could use a few more ideas for mine.

That’s what I am! To anything I do! 👌🏻 Today I drove 2 hrs one way to check and move the hatch from yesterday. That’s just what it takes sometimes. And it’s a good thing I did! As suspected, the temp had increased and the humidity was too high even after removing everything that had hatched by 1:00 yesterday!

Hopefully the rest of the Cochins will continue to hatch and dry off today. Some are pipped and zipped so 🤞🏻! Bantams tend to hatch a day early and Cochins up to a day or 2 late. Just how it goes.

🥰 To be the best mom and the best chicken tender I can be, there are sacrifices and compromises to be made!

Anytime we plan to leave the plastic on the growout coop a bear gives us a reason to freshen it up! 😣
