📖 Assessing your flock! 📝 ⭐️ WINGS ⬇️

⭐️ You’ll want a camera, notebook, pen, and the Standard when assessing and documenting the growth and characteristics of each of your birds.

🍀 💚 For many of our followers, 4-H and FFA are in full swing and fair time is just around the corner. Our first breeding pen of the year will be cooping in next week in Wadena! 🙌🏻

As you look over your birds, it’s easiest to take it one bite at a time! If you just look over your whole bird at a glance, you may miss big things here and there that may be important in your final selection!

⭐️ Please remember, there is a major difference between a DQ and a fault.

Over the next few days I’ll be pointing out a few key traits to watch for while you choose your showbirds for the fair, or any other show you may be attending.

🪶 Today I have chosen the topic of wings. These are the DQs and faults. If your bird exhibits one of these flaws, please set it aside, document it and work through to another option.

If there are other areas you have questions about, or if you need more information on the Standard please feel free to send me a PM.

🐓 From farm animals to zoo animals 🦁

After work, we took time for a trip to the zoo with the kids today.

Heavy on the birds and monkeys, but the kids had a blast! 🤷🏼‍♀️

This owl followed our daughter’s movements and was VERY interested in her! Good company, lots of pics, beautiful day, and the perfect start to our weekend.

My friend and I couldn’t believe how many Emu and Ostrich eggs were just laying around. What a waste 🤭 Someone should really incubate those things. We joked about sneaking one in our purses 😉 but of course we behaved ourselves.

Came home after a long day to clean all of the brooders. We are down to only 2 of the 4 with anything in them, but there are 60, yep SIXTY Cochin chicks that I will need to sort and band this weekend. Good thing everything is so freshly cleaned, and thankful our daughter is up to the task of helping with each and every one! What a trooper!

Long day, late night, and I’m pooped.

😴 Night world. 🌕

📸 Enjoy a few of our favorites from today. I’m a sucker for black and white!

🦒 🦁 🐻 🦩 What’s your favorite animal at the zoo!?

🐓 🥚 LEGHORNS 🤩

These beautiful creatures have truly grown on
me over the last year and I am really excited to be able to share them with you! Last year our numbers were not sufficient to support our 4-H program the way we had wanted, but 2027 is gearing up to be different! 🤞🏻

23 birds were banded today, with 15 of those being Leghorns, and 10 of those being pullers! Yay!

I still have a wonderful opportunity for 4-H, FFA, or other youth exhibitors to raise their own project for the 2027 fair season!

⭐️ Featured are 2 Pairs of Light Brown Leghorns

➡️ Check out the pinned post at the top of our page for additional availability! I know we are best known for Cochins but I’m working to be known for more than that. All in time. 😊

🍀 💚 Thoughts on Tuesday…..

🤷🏼‍♀️ Are not mine, but rather Craig’s, as his post truly hit home to me today.

⭐️ There are many words here that speak to me, but most importantly what many fail to realize is that…

1) I do this for me! (Aside from my 4-H program where I do it for the youth) 😊

2) You usually need to make some kind of relationship with them (a breeder). I can send my birds to anyone with the 💰 to pay for them, but it doesn’t work that way. I choose where my birds go and why. As if said before, this is not a business transaction for me. If it was I would be pumping out LF Buffs for everyone else all day long. IFKYK!

3) I need to know why they chose me, what they have done and what they intend to do with the birds. I don’t want all my hard work to be for nothing. I need to know that whoever gets them is going to do something great with them.

💬 If you care to share, I would love to know. What made you choose me? Some of you continuing to choose me time and time again. I appreciate all of you! 🫶🏼

🐛 So this is gross!!!! 🌳 Poor tree! 🍃

💬 Check out the comments for the black spots that caught my attention from afar! This ash tree is no longer a yummy treat!

⭐️ Tent and forest tent caterpillars feed on deciduous trees like ash, aspen, and oak. Infestations can leave a tree completely stripped of its leaves.

🤩 I could stare at these girls all day long ⬇️

As I sort through my birds a few times a year, I am constantly reminded that you just have to look at what you have compared to the Standard and your personal goals and ask yourself …..

🤔 “If this is the only bird I get eggs from during hatching season, is this what I will be happy with” ⁉️

If the answer is no, then down the road they go. 🚗

It is SO important to your breeding program to stay true to that advice!

The birds I offer are always going to be beautiful in someone else’s coop and the birds I re-coop always have great breeding potential for someone else. They just no longer have a place here compared to my keepers for the program I have worked so hard for.

These girls are 3, and will be 4 by the next time I hatch. 🤞🏻 They are even bigger and better in person. There is obviously a reason they have stayed, year after year, after year. 😉 I would love one more chance at their offspring.

After that, I would love nothing more than to find someone that wanted to show them! They are like fine wine and have only bettered with age. LF Cochins don’t show their true value before 2 years old. It’s truly a labor of love.

☀️ Beautiful girls enjoying the sun. ⬇️

This is the kind of skull you want on a Cochin! 🤩

📝 As I went through my current hens this week, as well as their daughters, I am proud of where we came from and where we are going. 💪🏻 Onward and upward.

🐓 🚗 🏠 2 hens are going to their forever home today. Another trio is going to their forever home on Sunday. I am sure I will regret parting with them come December 😩

📸 Don’t mind the white on her head. If you follow my posts, then you’ll know why it’s there 😉

⭐️ Oops 🤭

I took these, edited these, and filtered through the bloopers and after all that I forgot to share them with all of you!

The pictures are almost 2 months old now, but they are developing nicely all the same. 🤩

➡️ The boys in the c**k pen are going to get weeded through this weekend. There is too much tussle going on. If you’re in need of an extra black c**kerel, now is the time to send me a message. I can meet Sunday or Monday. They have been added to the list of available birds pinned to the top of our page.

☀️ 🐥 It’s Moving Day! 📦 🛻

30 birds are making their way from the brooder room to the wild outdoors. The crazy coop is always stop #2 before their final chicken shuffle in their forever coops.

🐓 Bantam New Hampshires, Legbars, and Rainbow Egg layers make up the 30 that will now have more room to roam, fresh outside air, and dirt to dust bathe in. 🥰

➡️ Onward and upward ⬆️

🗓️ This week I have my work cut out for me in banding 20+ Brown Legborns with a sprinkle of pure Legbar and my new favorite colored egg layer cross. 🤫 I’ll post a pic of that variety soon! 🤐

⭐️ I still have a few birds available. Check out the “available list” pinned to the top of our page for more info!

🎠🎡 Fun fact: Can you believe the first county fair of the year in MN is June 11th. Anyone from Hennepin County? That’s you! 🫵🏻 😊

☕️ 💻 🐕 Velcro Dog 😂

I love beautiful crisp summer mornings like these. And this girl, she is our one of a kind “experience”. I say it often, but it’s true. Everyone should experience a Great Dane companion at least once in their life.

🐶 She is quiet, calm, and easy going but still so full of personality and absolutely LOVES, love!

⭐️ And no, she isn’t sitting here to protect me, she’s sitting this close for me to protect her, from whatever she smells in the woods 🤭
