We’ve been very busy at Old Cypress Farms lately. Rustic Crumbs is doing fantastic, thanks to all our customers for supporting us. The cows are mowing the grass as fast as it can grow (thank you Lord for the rain), the pigs are growing exceptionally well and should be ready for processing in August, the laying hens are spitting out an egg a day each, and the dogs are enjoying our new hay bale mountain.

A fresh move always puts the cows in a feeding frenzy. Even the little ones get in on the buffet.

Piggies are growing out quite nicely. They are really enjoying the green grass and clover.

Pastured Bacon Bits are happy with a fresh move today. Laying hens and piggies are bunking together for a few weeks. Chickens and pigs complement each other nicely with the right management. Gonna be some awesome bacon, chops, and sausage.

USDA Inspected Grass fed/Grass finished Beef

This steer lived an awesome life on our farm & it shows in the quality of his steaks. From the first week of life he was adopted by our Jersey Momma Lola; he had constant access to green pastures & top notch hay. He even snuck a little milk from his momma after he was weaned. He was 29 months old and had one bad day where he served his purpose on this earth. Below is the cut list of what we are offering. Bulk burger orders will receive a discount (pm us for details). Pictures below for your viewing pleasure.

1-1/2” thick Boneless Ribeye - $12lb
1-1/2” thick New York Strips - $14lb
3lb +/- Roasts (chuck, sirloin, rump,etc) $7lb
1lb Burger - $6lb

“What do we do with a whole bird?” Is a question we often get asked.

Most economical and efficient cooking recipe:

1) Use a standard crockpot
2)place whole bird breast up
3)use your favorite dry shake seasoning/rub
4)season to your liking
5)turn on low
6)go to work/kids to school
7)come home after a long day and debone meat (it’s falling off the bone)
8)eat fresh over a bed of rice and veggies on the side
9a)use the golden brown broth from the pot with rice

OR

9b)place bones/skin back in crockpot, add a few drips of apple cider vinegar and fill crockpot 3/4 full with water, cook on low for an additional 24-48 hours, using a fine sift, pour bone broth in quart containers (makes about 4 quarts of delicious and healthy bone both) discard the remains into your cat or dogs bowl (bones are soft and pliable plus nutritious)

Results = 1-2 nutritious meals for your family, 3-4 quarts of highly nutritious bone broth, and zero animal waste, plus awesome nutritional supplements for your pets.

Yeah, we’re crazy! We have pigs in our backyard. This was a fresh move from this past weekend. Bacon bits are gonna help us renovate this area behind the house. They are checking out the grass and clover on the side of the road now but will soon discover the cutover down the hill towards the swamp and discover the rotten stumps and brush piles for some tasty morsels. Might even find a snake or two on warmer days. We should have fresh bacon and sausage around the middle May.

We are definitely ready for Spring, but our winter forage quality is greatly appreciated by our fat (healthy) cows. Hay bales just won’t do for our grassfed genetic herd in the winter. They crave the GRASS!!!

We had an awesome rabbit hunt at Old Cypress Farms today. My little buddy Marshal harvested his first rabbit and we killed 9 total before lunch. Its not just livestock that we raise here, the wildlife have a place on our farm as well. This is the last hunt of this season. Time to let the bunnies work on next year’s crop of rabbits to hunt.

Sustainable Farming Association

Are you confused on whether or not you consume meat? Are the conflicting "scientific" reports confusing you? Solution: Do you own research and decide for yourself what is better for you and your family. I think most agree that governmental agencies in charge of our food system (FDA & USDA) does not have our (the consumer) best interest at heart when making decisions. Who lines their pockets? Who do they cater to with their policies? Who does their policies hurt the most? (hint: its the person reading this post)

Educate yourself and ask questions like: "Where does my food come from?" "How was my food raised/produced?" "Am I happy with the environmental impact that went into the production of my food?"

We really think the answers to these questions will shock some of you. If you think healthy food (the real healthcare) is expensive now, think about the "sickcare" cost that are steadily rising. Where do most of our modern day illnesses come from? Ultra processed foods? Unsafe levels of additives to Vaccines? Mineral/Vitamin/Nutrient deficient foods? Yes, yes, and yes!!!

You the consumer have the POWER to change the system!!!!!

"Science has yet to replicate what comes out the back end of a cow."
-Words of Wisdom from SFA-

"Should we eat meat?"

SFA staff and farmers Jerry Ford and Kent Solberg chat in-field about the complexity of this question--and what regenerative agricultural practices have to offer in environmental, economic, and community health.

Filmed at Living Song Farm (Howard Lake, MN) and Snake River Farm Minnesota (Becker, MN).

Considering our extreme heat and borderline drought conditions in West Alabama lately, our herd looks pretty good. Especially our Red Angus Steer. Damon & Fran Folmar and Our family will be eating good when we process him in the Spring. Our soon to be momma cows are looking good still and as we plant our Winter Annual mixes, they should get some good nutrition for their babies to grow healthy and be delivered in the Spring.

We will have one or two steers going to the processor in October. If anyone is interested in some beef let us know through a pm and we will explain our process for buying our quality beef.

Greg Judy sequestering carbon with beautiful cow mob (reposted) I mesed up the former title

There is a false flag war on cows/meat going on in this country. In some parts of our country its gaining more steam than in others. If politicians, scientists, and environmental activists are serious about Carbon Sequestering, then we don't need a global summit, carbon taxes, or government interference. We need more farmers doing this. We also need a consumer base that is willing to put their money where their mouth is. Greg Judy says it best, we don't need our animals in buildings, we need them on the land. This is why we do what we do. Its very therapeutic to watch these animals in a low stress environment. The animals are calm, they are happy, and they are thriving...

True Cost Accounting

This is a short video that "roughly" explains true cost economics. I think that YOU the consumer need to be informed as to what you are buying. Where did the product come from? Who produced it? What were the conditions/costs associated with the production of the product? When was it produced (stockpiled, shelf life, etc...)/ How does it affect you, your family, the environment, your neighbor, the future, etc...?

By considering all the external costs factored out of the cost of food, an economic principle called true cost accounting helps consumers understand the real...

When we bought our land it was bare. No pasture at all, just red Hale Co dirt. We invested A LOT to get nutrient dense forage seeded along with microbes, minerals and lots of prayers for rain. So we are just a wee bit thrilled to have so much green in the middle of July with this being our 4th year on the farm.
So here’s our retirement, eating our vacations 😉
