Every great town has a story, and Akron's began with a big dream.
In June of 1847, a small but determined community officially became the Village of Akron. At the time, only 462 people called it home. Those early residents believed their little village was destined for something bigger!
Just a few years later, entrepreneur Hezekiah Cummings built the impressive stone grist mill at the foot of Main Street, helping establish Akron as a center for industry. Although a devastating flood washed away the mill's dam in 1860, Akron's spirit never wavered.
As the years passed, the village flourished thanks to its hardworking residents and booming flour and cement industries. Companies like E.J. Newman & Co. transformed the power of Murder Creek into thriving mills and cement works, producing materials that helped build communities far beyond Akron.
From a village of just a few hundred dreamers to one of Erie County's fastest-growing communities of its time, Akron's story has always been one of resilience, innovation, and neighbors working together to build something lasting.
More than 175 years later, that same hometown spirit is still alive in the businesses, families, and people who proudly call Akron home.
