The Ribeira Sacra D.O. confirms its recovery with its best sales figures in recent years.

The 2025 results point to a sustained upward trend: the designation bottled a total of 3.38 million litres, a growth of over 5% compared to 2024. And the start of 2026 has been even stronger, with a 12% increase in wine volume brought to market in the first quarter.

Exports are also performing well, closing 2025 with an 11% growth in international sales — a clear sign of the growing recognition of Ribeira Sacra wines in high-value markets.

Adding to this, wineries have reduced their unbottled stock by more than 15% compared to March 2025, bringing inventory down from 6.15 to 5.22 million litres — a vital rebalancing ahead of the next harvests.

Rías Baixas Wines Strengthen Their Position in the Spanish Market.

The Rías Baixas Designation of Origin ranks 4th by value and 8th by volume among the top-selling D.O. wines in Spain, across both on-trade and retail channels — and it is the Spanish D.O. with the fastest-growing value share over the past year.

According to a NielsenIQ report, Rías Baixas wines grew +9.1% in volume and +8.6% in value between April 2025 and March 2026. Value share rose from 4.8% to 5.3% — five percentage points gained in a single year.

While the national D.O. wine market contracted slightly (–1.3% in volume, –0.5% in value), wines from Galicia bucked the trend: +12.7% in volume and +14.7% in value, reaching €266.2 million. Galician D.O. wines now account for 28.4% of all white D.O. wine sold in Spain, with Rías Baixas leading in production, sales, and average bottle price — the highest across all Spanish regions.

Respect pruning emerges as a key practice for vineyard sustainability and longevity.

Respect pruning is gaining relevance as an essential technique to improve vineyard sustainability, extend vine lifespan, and enhance grape quality. Based on principles such as minimizing cuts, respecting sap flow, and preserving the plant’s natural structure, this approach allows vines to live well beyond 100 years, compared to the roughly 30-year average seen in more intensive systems.

During technical sessions led by the Instituto Ourensano de Desarrollo Económico (INORDE) within the framework of the Interreg Poctep Circular Ecosystems project, industry experts highlighted the importance of adapting pruning practices to each vineyard, avoiding aggressive interventions that may compromise plant health.

In addition to reducing the risk of wood diseases, respect pruning promotes better vegetative balance and strengthens vineyard resilience against challenges such as water stress and climate change. Although it requires greater expertise and time investment, its medium- and long-term benefits position it as a strategic tool for a more sustainable and circular viticulture model.

Spain Leads Global Organic Wine Production as EU Regulations Spark Debate.

Spain continues to rank as a global leader in organic wine production, with more than 125,000 hectares of certified vineyards and steady growth in organic vineyard area worldwide. This was highlighted during the 17th University Conference on Organic Wine held at the University of La Rioja.

Industry experts noted that this leadership represents a significant opportunity to strengthen the international presence of Spanish organic wines. However, they also warned that European regulations may create confusion by using the terms “organic,” “ecological,” and “biological” interchangeably, making it more difficult for both producers and consumers to clearly identify production practices.

Participants agreed that the sector holds strong potential, but emphasized that improved communication and promotion will be essential to boost consumption and ensure greater value recognition for organic wines.

Barcelona Wine Week 2026 confirms the international momentum of Spanish wine.

This week we attended Barcelona Wine Week 2026, an edition that once again highlighted the growing international reach of Spanish wine and the fair’s role as a key meeting point for the industry.

The event brought together 1,350 wineries from 90 Designations of Origin and welcomed 25,953 professional visitors, with 20% coming from 73 countries. The number of international buyers increased by 25%, reaching 962 professionals, and nearly 13,700 business meetings were held throughout the show.

The fair stood out for its strong commercial activity, high-level networking, and a comprehensive program of tastings and conferences featuring leading industry experts, reinforcing its position as a strategic platform for the global expansion of Spanish wine.
