It's been a while since I've posted here. As many of you know I lost my dad in April, unexpectedly. I haven't felt like saying much since his death. Dad was my inspiration, my reason for farming. His life revolved around his work. His dedication to his farm and family will be hard to beat. I think as a way to get back into posting, I'll share some of the "farm facts" that made my dad so special. Most people aren't aware, that my father farmed successfully for many years, over 40 I believe, on an 8th grade education. Even though dad probably didn't love school, I don't think he had a choice to complete his education. He raised a family of 5, on income from milk, and put several of us through college. In the picture below, he's wearing a Harvestore Hat. He was very successful at making great quality forages with his Harvestores, and was featured in one of their magazines.

It was a cold one here this am -16F. Calves are impressively resilient to the cold. I do get a little nervous when we dip below Zero and I’ve put some new babies outside. The key to my success is blankets, deep beds of straw, and for new babies I fill a 5 gallon pail full of pure hot water (180F) and put it in their hutches. It’s AMAZING how much heat it gives off🔥

Did you know that making homemade yogurt is "wicked" easy!
Its nice to know what's in your food, and you can't get any fresher than this. I've tried a few different ways, and put together instructions that have worked the best for me.

Today's Dairy Breed is the Brown Swiss
Originating in the Swiss Alps, Brown Swiss adapt well to high altitudes and hot or cold climates, while producing large volumes of milk, ideal for cheese-making. The milk of the Brown Swiss is unique, having longer-chain fatty acids than other popular dairy breeds and smaller fat globules in the cream; this difference means that cream rises much more slowly in milk from Brown Swiss cows. This difference, and the ratio of protein to fat in the milk, is ideal for cheesemaking.
Correct feet and legs, well-attached udders and dairy strength contribute to their exceptional productive life, and longevity.
The color of the Brown Swiss varies from light brown or gray to dark shades of these colors.
Pictured below is Felise our Brown Swiss Cow. She is five years old and on her last test her butterfat was 4.5% and her protein was 3.6%. She is a smaller, more dairy cow in comparison to some of the other Brown Swiss, I've also shown a picture of a Brown Swiss in the Alps with a bell, to give you an idea of the true breed characteristics.

When we started farming we were primarily a Holstein Herd. Holsteins were my roots, and my true passion. Through meeting people, and friends of friends, we now have incorporated all seven of the major dairy breeds into our farm. Over the next few weeks I'd like to take the time to introduce those breeds here.

Today's Breed is Guernsey.
The Guernsey is a breed of dairy cattle from the island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands. It is fawn or red and white in color, and is hardy and docile. Its milk is rich in flavor, high in fat and protein, and has a golden-yellow tinge due to its high β-carotene content.

Guernseys can also naturally be A2A2, which means there milk only contains A2 Beta-casein. Research shows that A2A2 milk is easier to digest, even for people with milk sensitivities(lots of research on this topic).

Shown below is our Guernsey Lydia, owned by John and Peggy DeLong. She is A2A2, and shown is a picture of golden milk with the cream line! Lydia just turned 8 years on in December, we recently tested and her milk is 5.4% butterfat, and 4% protein.

One of the most rewarding parts about being a farmer is new life. The excitement I get leading up to the birth of a new calf makes the hard times easier to swallow. Meet “Rave”. Her moms name is Rosie. Rosie is owned by our good friend Renee LaCoss. We’ve been taking care of Rosie since she was two. Rosie is what I call a rockstar, she just celebrated her 8th birthday in December and this is her 6th heifer calf. She has calved every December except this year... January ❤️#babycalves #skida

Lord, Bless the land you've given me,
And May I always know
As I tend each crop and creature
You're the one who helps them grow.

Grant me the strength and wisdom
Please protect me from harm.
And thank You
For your gracious gift~
