INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SOD

Over 25 million acres of lawn are tended in the Unites States.

A solitary grass plant can have 387 miles of root system. Up to 90 percent of the weight of a grass plant is in its roots.

The front lawn of one average sized home in the United States has the same cooling effect as almost 9 TONS of air conditioning… That's over twice the cooling power than most single central air units in houses!

On a hot day, lawns will be 30 degrees cooler than asphalt and 14 degrees cooler than bare soil.

Infrequent and deep watering is preferred to frequent and shallow watering. Roots will only grow as deep as their most frequent available water supply. Deeply rooted grass has a larger “soil-water bank” to draw moisture from and this helps the grass survive drought conditions and hot weather that dries out the upper soil layer. During the remainder of the growing season, most lawns will do very well with a maximum of one inch of water a week from either irrigation or rainfall.
Soil conditions may dictate irrigation be applied into settings, approximately 2 to 3 days apart. This amount of water is all that is required for healthy grass, providing it is applied evenly and wets the underlying soil to a depth of 6 inches (15 cm).

Water is essential to all life. Too little water and we die, too much water and we drown. The same is true of the grass in our lawns. Water makes up to 70% to 80% of the weight of grasses and the clippings alone are nearly 90% water. While most people are concerned about not watering their lawns enough, the fact is, more lawns are damaged by overwatering.

Taking good care of your lawn often requires no more work overall than taking poor care of it. A lawn that is properly mowed, fertilized and watered has far fewer problems with weeds, diseases and insects. A well-kept lawn also remains dense and attractive, providing you much more enjoyment and environmental benefits.

Proper installation, great care and maintenance are key components in the establishment of your lawn. To assist with your efforts, Wright Turf Farms has provided a list of things to be concerned with to manage your lawn and to keep your lawn and field looking beautiful and green.

General Lawn Maintenance: watering, mowing, fertilizing

Fertilizer Programs/Application: the fertilizer should be applied according to the season

Soil Acidity Inspections: the improper level reduces the availability of plant nutrients

Lime Application: if the soil is too acidic, limestone will correct the problem

Water Management (for established lawns)

Mowing: this helps with the appearance and with growth; grass must be kept at a particular height for growth

CERTIFIED PALISADES ZOYSIA:

Palisades Zoysia is a medium to coarse textured turf noted for its shade tolerance and low water use requirements. It will tolerate mowing as close as ½” with a reel mower and as high as 2 - 2 1/2 inches for home lawns. Palisades is a high density turf noted specifically suitable for golf course fairways and roughs, sports fields and home lawns. Palisades close mowing would permit use on golf course fairways especially where water availability is concern.

TALL FESCUE:

Tall Fescue is a perennial, dark green, bunch-type grass that grows rapidly during the spring and fall. Its popularity relates to its ease of establishment through seeding and its green color during spring and fall, when warm season turfgrasses are dormant and brown. Tall fescue is adapted to a wide range of soil conditions but grows best on fertile, well-drained soils. This grass stays green year-round under irrigated conditions and demonstrates good shade tolerance in the southern region. Recommended mowing height: 2 - 3 inches.
