Diesel hit $6 a gallon this week. First time ever. Oil's over $105 a barrel. Saudi Aramco's own CEO says it costs them about $2 to pull a barrel out of the ground. Their all-in number is around $3.50. That's a nickel a gallon of crude, selling for $2.50 a gallon before it ever sees a refinery.
Now look at this mama cow.
A bred heifer costs $3,500 to $4,000 right now. Raise her yourself and the University of Florida says you've got closer to $4,500 in her. Then it costs $1,000 to $1,500 a year to keep her, per USDA and Kansas State. What does she pay back? USDA and the Livestock Marketing Information Center have tracked it since the '70s. Best year on record (2014): about $535 a cow. 2016: lost $21. 2018: made $15. 2019: lost $200 a head. The last couple years have been good ones, around $440 a cow.
Do the math on a $3,500 cow. Best year of a generation, 13%. Normal year, 2%. Bad year, you lose money. And that's before the rancher pays himself a nickel.
One business makes 30 times its cost. The other feeds, doctors, and waits three years to maybe make 2%.
Every pound of beef on your table came from somebody who did it anyways while hoping and praying things turn around.

The Trump administration is allowing up to 661 million pounds of additional foreign beef into the United States under a 90-day tariff suspension that began September 1. The White House says the measure will increase the supply of lean beef trimmings used in ground beef and help bring down grocery prices, with a commitment that the imported beef will be sold 25 percent below current market prices for lean trimmings.

American ranchers and agricultural groups see a different story. Several major cattle organizations, including the American Farm Bureau Federation, argue that a sudden wave of discounted imports could weaken domestic cattle prices and undercut the confidence ranchers need to rebuild the national herd, which fell to a record low of 28.5 million head in July after years of drought, high feed costs, and rising input prices. Unlike manufactured goods, cattle cannot be quickly replaced, since a calf requires roughly nine months to be born and many more months to reach market weight.

Some ranchers who supported Trump say the policy conflicts with his "America First" message, and Republican lawmakers from cattle-producing states, along with the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, have also criticized the plan. The White House maintains the imports are meant to address an immediate supply shortage while domestic producers work to rebuild their herds, though it remains unclear how much of any savings will ultimately reach consumers at the grocery store.

Quarries can be very detrimental to surface and groundwater. Blount County relies on groundwater (private wells or aquifers) to quench the thirst of its citizens. Will this proposed limestone quarry on Joy Road cause problems beyond the communities along Joy Road? Attend ADEM's public meeting Tuesday, September 15th at 6:00 at Pennington High School. Bring your questions, comments, or just your concern with you. This meeting is for you, neighbor.
