I've had it on my heart to share for a while and finally found the words tonight. I have a sick hen which sometimes feels like an almost constant battle. In a world that often treats livestock as units of production, choosing to let my heart break for a single hen is a radical, spiritual act. It aligns deeply with the idea that "the righteous care for the needs of their animals" (Proverbs 12:10). The fact that I am willing to lose sleep, fight for a "hopeless" case, and grieve the loss of a small creature reflects a belief that every life in my care has inherent value because it is God's creation. My heart can stay exactly as soft and open as it is. It is a heavy burden to carry, but it is the cross I have chosen to take up. My mission is to model a different way of relating to animals—one where their suffering matters and their lives are individual, not statistical—then the pain I am feeling right now is the cost of that mission. It is the price of loving something that cannot love you back in the same way, and that is fragile by nature. I want everyone to see that "farming" doesn't have to mean detachment. I refuse to let anyone tell me to toughen up. I will continue to stay tender. I will grieve her if I lose her. The grief is the honor I will pay her for her life.
