HOW MUCH FOR A GOAT?

Let me say a few words to you, yes you, the person who sends a text to just ask for the price. The person who calls and hears the price and says “I can buy a cheaper goat somewhere else”. I'll talk to you too; the person who doesn't care about papers because I want “just a pet and milk goat to raise”.

No registered goat is “just a pet and milk goat”.

Behind every purebred goat is a BREEDER. I use capital letters to distinguish a breeder from a backyard operation where no thought goes into the animals being bred except making more of them, regardless of body stature or health.

If you choose to buy a goat from a reputable and quality breeder, this breeder is responsible for every goat produced on their farm.

This breeder sometimes skips vacations and events, misses sleep, and most of their personal time is dedicated to their goats and their well being. The truly passionate breeder puts everything they can into it. Not only for goats that are sold, but also for every customer who owns a piece of their heart and is now a member of their large family!

A breeder will get his hands dirty, often covered in everything that comes with goat ownership including but not limited to birth. Because that's what life is all about... in the midst of birth and death is life. The wheel that keeps spinning. A breeder conducts ultrasounds, analytics, emergency vet calls, vaccinations, registrations, researches pedigrees, deworming, hoof trims and provides the base start for the future of the goat in handling, milking and showing.

Last but not least, the BREEDER CHOOSES the family who is lucky enough to have one of their goats. Yes, you read correctly!

* A real breeder chooses who they sell to. *
There really is no compensation that can offset the investment a breeder has made. A good breeder has other criteria for those who want to continue their bloodline, why? Because breeding isn't a responsibility to take lightly, it's a lifestyle choice reserved ONLY for the few devoted people willing to sacrifice. Our goats needs to be cared for, managed properly, and bred with the highest regard and intention.

Since a goat is never “just a pet” he/she is the legacy of the breeder - as well as little one's best friend, a caretaker of someone in need, therapy for the elderly, and/or someone's whole world!

Responsible breeding and possession of many goats is a lifestyle and commitment many can not understand or handle. 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our lives revolve around the goats! Please understand, we are putting everything we can into our prized possessions! These are not just "goats" to us

Well …. I’ve been somewhat keeping a secret from you guys. We bought an Oberhasli (a farm first 😂) from Treasure Meadows Oberhasli Dairy Goats!!

Treasure Meadows Sweet Revenge (who we’ve been calling Clementine 🍊) placed first in her class (Junior Kids) and won Reserve Champ Dry Oberhasli!!
Our very own Country Lake BC Ember placed first in her class (Senior Kids) and won Reserve Champion Dry Nigerian Dwarf!!

Milking Does:
Country Lake D Rosie Posie placed first in her class (Milking Yearlings) over her sister. She was considered in the Champion Lineup. Although she didn’t win Grand or Reserve Champ, the judge had some very nice comments.
Country Lake F Honey did place second (Milking Yearling) after her sister of course 🙄😂

Dry Does:
Country Lake BP Persimmon placed first in her class (Junior Kids) and was considered in the Champion / Reserve Champ Lineup.
Country Lake BH Minnie placed second in her class (Intermediate Kids) although it seemed the judge wanted to place her higher. She was a little naughty in the ring 😂
Country Lake BJ Lemon Drop placed second (Junior Kids) and was also invited back for the Champ / Reserve Champ Lineup!
Country Lake BL Junior placed third (Junior Kids).
Country Lake BO Thumbelina placed fourth in her class (Junior Kids)!

As a ten year member of Noble County 4H, there are so many people that have helped me so I owe a big, BIG thank you to Susan Mullins Moore, Dylan Baxter, Lucy Moore, and Kevin Andrew Moore for all your help the last ten years. You are the reason I am where I am today.

We finally finished our birthing kit! Click the pics to see what we added 😉
And …….. it’s right next to the door for fast grabbing

Here is our complete supply list!!

cheap bath towels - help clean up babies bodies

puppy pads - we place them under moms bottom to make it easier for mom to clean babies without bedding getting on babies

washcloths - used to clean babies mouths and eyes

bulb syringe - sucks goop out of mouth and nose

corn syrup - can be used for mom for some fast energy or babies to perk them up

vaseline - if you need to go inside mom. actual l**e is better but we already had vaseline

vitamin e pills (technically for humans) - we cut them open. can help with energy and just overall alertness

vitamin b complex paste (oral) - supports digestion, energy, and appetite. we give to moms after kidding

electrolytes oral paste - energy, mainly for mom after birth

blue ribbon “power punch” / drench gun (from tsc) - for fast energy after birth. can be used in small amounts for babies if lethargic

probiotic paste - for babies if they have loose stool

BoSE injection (from vet) - for muscle tone. we give 0.5 (i think) to every kid. i usually wait about a week but if we get a kid with hyperextended legs we give within a couple hours to hopefully correct

bottles - we have a regular bottle as well as two kitten bottles all from tsc. our goats only take the little bottles. i can include a picture if interested.

Syringes and needles - we have several sizes of syringes for many things. injections, milk, sometimes boogie suckers. we have several sizes of needles. a couple big for drawing up meds and smaller ones for the actual injection.

powder milk replacer - from tsc in case of emergency

powder electrolyte - i prefer the paste mentioned above.

paper towels - to clean goop out of mouth and nose

hair dryer - imo this is a necessity if your doe kids from november to march. we are located in NE IN where the weather is regularly in the 20s during kidding season. it is crucial to get the kids as dry as possible as fast as possible. kid’s temps will drop dramatically the second they are born. kids also cannot regulate their temp and need help. sometimes we provide heat lamps if it is really cold and we have newborn kids.

and lastly, you can see our tote with all the stuff is clear. in the pic by the door it’s gray. the gray is another tote that will be used for drying kids in the kidding stall and will be used if any kids need it come inside!

As we're heading into the colder months, we are seeing a lot of posts inquiring about keeping our goats warm. Goats do not need jackets, nor do they need heat. I use shavings and wasted hay. I will never again do the deep litter method. Depending how much they are stuck inside depends on how often I need to clean out their shelter. If you're going to provide a heat source the Premier 1 Supply has a safer heat lamp and worth the investment. PLEASE, PLEASE reconsider using a metal heat lamp, so not worth the risk!!

Here is the link to Premier 1 Supply’s heat lamp :

A rugged and reliable heat lamp used to warm lambs, goat kids, chickens or for any animal that is sick or cold. Use standard or infrared heat bulbs.

09/12/2022

If you are looking for Nigerian Dwarf goats to add to your herd and you want to make sure you are not getting scammed by someone, look for ADGA registered herds.

HOW TO AUTHENTICATE A PERSON & THEIR HERD BEFORE BUYING:
Step 1: Require they give you their registered name and address and ADGA membership #
Step 2: Go to ADGA website
Step 3: Click on PEOPLE, then MEMBER LOOKUP
Step 4: In Search area, type in ADGA Account # or Account Name. Membership #, Member Name and Address will come up.
Step 5: IF THE INFORMATION YOU HAVE FROM A BREEDER DOES NOT MATCH THE ADGA INFORMATION EXACTLY-THERE IS A PROBLEM! (Tell them the information they gave you does not match the ADGA membership information. They must be able to produce the correct information as it appears on the ADGA Website). If they are really a member, they will be able to give you this
Step 6: Ask for the goats registration name and number. If you are acquiring a kid, ask for the Dam and Sire name and number. Check these on ADGA website to authenticate by clicking on ADGA Genetics Website . Pedigrees Here you will be able to: Search for individual animals registered with the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA). This can be done by herdname, full registered name, partial name or registration number.
Step 7: Ask for their Farm Website. Is it well established with all the information?
Step 8: Examine their Facebook Farm Page. Is it well established for the length of time they say they have been breeding goats?
If you are a breeder with no website or no well established Facebook Farm page or do not have an ADGA membership, it will restrict placement of your goats. This is the world we live in and if we want to place our goats into someone's herd, we have to expect they have a right to ask you to authenticate yourself before they buy from you.
