The water level in the river has risen to flow into our pond. The side creek has risen so high that Filler Family Apiary and Farm is removing the bee hives as we are to have more rain and the ground was giving way slightly now. This is the worst flooding in 15 years. Inches from the bottom of the bridge, which usually has close to 10ft of clearance. The ducks, however are having the time of their lives.

This 5 gal bucket was empty yesterday. 1/2 full and it will rain all day.

What is this? I guess you could call it shepherd's garlic, lol. Today I weeded my garlic. I planted the cloves last Fall. Mulched them with sheep's wool. Wool is an excellent mulch. It allows water to pass thru, retains water, and insulates the plant. All natural, it eventually breaks down into the soil, adding nutrients. Garlic is typically harvested in late June.

We have been dealt an unfortunate blow this week. The Process, where I have been selling my duck eggs, has closed. Just as my ducks have been laying very well! I will be pursuing other venues to sell them. Now is a good time to try duck eggs, especially if you bake. Share our info with anyone you feel may be interested. PM me with any questions. TIA.

So, I am fixing supper and look out the kitchen window to see a large dark bird swoop over the pond. An immature bald eagle making a a play for my ducks in the pond. I tore out of the house screaming like a banshee! It made 2 more swooping dives, but the ducks dove underwater and in his inexperience, he missed. I ran shrieking "not today", waving my arms, an insane old woman! It looked back a few times before deciding not to attempt another strafing run. Lauren had just driven up and saw the eagle diving. She told me I needed an air horn... There were Canada geese on the pond, and the crazed calling from them and 40 ducks was deafening. A blue heron took flight, and after going inside, saw a pair of wood ducks fly over. No shortage of excitement at Creakey Acres Farm!

Twin boys born to Elivira by 2:30 am today. No complications. This very well could be our last lambing season as I plan to sell the flock off. Return is not matching the effort at this point.

Earlier this week was much warmer...and not gale force winds. The honeybees were quenching their thirst in the sun- warmed water. Birdbaths: they're not just for birds any more.

After a long day, its gonna be a long night. I had to pull twins from a ewe who had complications. The ewe lamb was stillborn, and this lil guy will be a bottle baby. Mom is just too weak to care for him.

We had been out in barn off and on all night treating Sheebah for pregnancy toxemia. Scott was out at 6 am, everyone ok, nothing going down. 8am I go out and Sassy had twins up and trying to nurse! Black ewe and white ram. 1 down, 2 to go! Sheebah is up and feeding, crisis averted!

Final update on the rescue birds. The 3 ducks were put in with the flock since the pond is now open and the snow is gone. They joined right in and were instantly in sync with coming into the quack shack at end of day.
Yesterday the adult, healthy hens were put into the right half of the quack shack that will be their permanent home. At this time there are 30 who we hope will be laying more soon. (14 a day now). They have the large, netted turkey pen as their new range.
Today I returned the 4 small chickens that I have been treating for eye/sinus infections to the small recovery pen in the pole barn. There are also 3 roosters and a silkie and bantams and immature production hens in the large pen. The bantams and silkie will soon move to a new home that will accommodate them. 2 of those are kinds special needs and will do better in a more accommodating farm.
Sadly, 12 of the 61 we took in did not make it. The condition they arrived in, the upper respiratory infections, and the bitter cold for the following 3 weeks proved too much.

Egg anomalies explained by poultry husbandry. Have you ever seen grainy bumps on your farm fresh eggs? There's a simple explanation. We offer natural ground oyster shell to our hens to strengthen the shells and keep the hens' bones strong when they are laying. This egg is from the rescue pen. I have had oyster shell in there to help get them healthier as they start to lay again. We have had them now for 6 wks. This week then I refilled their bowl they ate ALL of it. As a result, they will put extra on their eggs.
