New laying hens. Called pullets until they start laying eggs.
Anyone interested in cucumbers for pickling? 20# for $30. Lesser amounts for $2/#. Can be eaten fresh as well. Need to get them no later than Monday. I will be in Fort Wayne tomorrow afternoon.
Advance notice: there may not be turkeys from CAF this year. Due to avian flu concerns, hatcheries are limiting hatch and stopping early. At this time we may not be able to acquire broad breasted whites. In addition, our main processor is closing in August for an indefinite period while they move the operation to a new location. Add to that the rising cost of feed, which will force us to raise prices, potentially out of customer's budgets. We may have to sit this year out. Waiting for info from our poultry provider. Will keep you updated.
I have some gooseberry canes potted for sale, $10/ea, at least 2 canes in each pot. They are the thorned variety. They will be available at my Ft. Wayne delivery address. PM me for more info. Folks local to me can get some as well, there are more to divide.
The babies are growing!
Exciting announcement! We will be growing and fabricating for Jas.Townsend and Sons, an 18th century re-enactors' supply house. What, you ask? Gourd bowls, water bottles, and canteens. We are fans of Townsend's products YouTube vids. We are initially outsourcing, as t will be a year til we can have gourds dried to craft with.
This confused hen has decided she wants to breastfeed..... (FYI broken egg stuck to her)
It was reported today that egg prices are up and there's a shortage ahead of Easter. Well, Creakey Acres Farm has no shortage! The ducks have been laying full force, and plenty of chicken eggs, still at last year's prices.
2am and Sassy had just a head out, no feet (usually come out w/feet under chin.) I had to go in and rotate his shoulders and pull the legs out one at a time and then pulled him right out. Mom and baby rebounded fast, mom cleaned him like a champ, drank her recovery water, and let him nurse many times over the next 1 1/2 hours. Usually that means she's done. We went to bed, and sadly, 3 hours later when Scott went to check, she had delivered a 2nd and left it. Possibly was stillborn because of the difficult delivery of the 1st, and born so ling after the 1st. 1 is better than none, it's sad, but that's life on the farm. Thinking of naming the ram lamb Corky because he was stuck like a cork.
Godiva swiftly had twins this am, girl and boy. Boy having a rough start as for some reason he got cold fast. Mom was attentive, not rejecting. Now inside and warmed up, has had mom's colostrum. Will try to return him to mom shortly. Send good MOJO our way, please and thank you. UPDATE: boy warmed up, took mom's colostrum from a bottle, and after a rest, put him with Godiva, she took him back (oldest ewe and best mom). He has since nursed her and is holding his temp. Had to use the blow dryer on both of them, too much for mom to do alone in 25 degrees. Now holding their own.
We have had a visitor on the pond the last 2 days.
News from the farm: We are making a change in our produce production. We will no longer be participating in farmer's markets. I mentioned this before, but we have made the commitment to do this after having good pepper production in 2021.
We have paired with B&Z BBQ and hot sauces to provide them with the peppers for their flavorful hot sauces. We will be planting most of our garden in many varieties of peppers with varying levels of heat. Their products are for sale online. Www.bzbbqsauce.com
Amazing sunrise this am from the kitchen widow. 1 hour layer totally cloudy and snowing.
Teresa now works away from the farm part-time. Please give extra time and patience when requesting. Will get to you ASAP.
Out of our control, the processor has delayed our date to 20th, so I won't be able to deliver turkeys til Tuesday the 21st, or 22nd. Monday pm pickup at the farm is also possible. Teresa has a new part-time job away from the farm so the deliveries will be in later afternoons. And we still have additional turkeys for sale.
Christmas turkeys are now available to reserve. They will be ready for pickup at the farm on December 18, and I will be delivering on Sunday, December 19. Please contact via private message to reserve.
Thanksgiving turkeys have been delivered. Now taking reservations for Christmas turkeys.
A very sad day.
We are excited for this new event we are participating in this year!!! A new Fort Wayne show!! Come on out October 30 9-3pm to see us and all the other vendors at this first ever event!!!
These saucesare the 💣
Ready to take reservations for chickens ready 3rd eek of October, deposit $5/ ea. Scott has had flax seed added to the blend to increase the Omega-3 content in the meat. Studies have shown this can bring the levels equal to that in salmon. Heart healthy! Also, taking orders for turkeys, $25/ea. They are getting a smaller % of the Omega feed. Please message on this page, NOT comment below with your order. Jessy Scott will be taking orders for the Fort Wayne customers in her care, so place them with her. Thank you.
Back fenced pasture out of commission, snag from neighbor's fell in, taking the fence with it. Grateful the pole barn was spared. Also thankful that the snag is covered in grapevine, not poison ivy!
No one is immune to the work force crisis. Our Amish poultry processor is shut down because the employees quit! If our 2nd option can't we may be forced to process the broilers we have now ourselves. So many English started raising their own meat birds that it has completely overwhelmed and crushed the Amish industry here. I am sure the inexperienced have been just as abusive as they have been to veterinarians and food service.
Augusta Hills rain or shine, Farmers' Market, we will be inside the barn! Lots of veggies, herbs, eggs, and bread. Come get some fresh food for your weekend!
Will be at Augusta Hills farmer's market in Albion tomorrow with Goat Girl Soaps. Egg bread, veggies, garlic, dill, duck and chicken eggs. Come buy, eat, support local.
Life out here: when a mouse chews thru the starter wiring on the barn frig, you lose a frig full of eggs. Thankfully, there was nothing of Value in the freezer. Scott has it up and running. Thankfully we have no egg orders this week.
It was moving day for the ducklings. Can't believe they are already 8 weeks and pretty much full size! Put them into the duck yard and they will start to integrate into the flock. This one is ok, just went all limp when Jaxson picked her(?) up.
It took 3 weeks, but I found out where the geese came from. They had been on the lake (we live a short distance downstream from a lake). On that lake is a campground owned by my next door neighbor's family. Neighbor's kids and uncle caught them, thought they were ducks, and because they were so tame, they thought they were ours and left them at our barn while we were away. Seems they were probably turned loose at the public access. I have been turning them loose and they stay very close to the barn area, and seem to like it here. They are tamer than the ducks!
We will be at Augusta Hills in Albion on Saturday for the Farmer's Market, 9amm- noon. In addition to chicken and duck eggs we will have green beans, cucumbers, garlic, broccoli, kale, cabbage, and summer squash. Come early, beans go fast!
Share our page so more folks know about us and what we offer. If you've done business with us, kindly leave us some feedback!
Here's a first in 10 years. Someone dumped this pair of geese on our farm while we were away for a couple hours. Quite tame, the dogs went right up to them with no fear or attack. They were heading into our pole barn when we went out to close up for the night. They were more than happy to go into the safety of the turkey pen. They will have a good home here, or at daughter Lauren's farm. I think they are American Buff breed, young, and possibly male and female.
Set up and ready to serve you at Augusta Hills LRCC in Albion.
Here are 4 of the 5. #5 is still in the incubator, getting some extra TLC. #5 looks to be full Indian runner, their necks and bodies are longer and it takes longer to get that coordination balanced.
2 eggs are pipped and this one is rockin'! Just took them out of the turner yesterday.
Today's the day! Pop- up shop in New Paris, IN for 3 days. Filler's Apiary has theirs next door. Townwide garage sale going on. And here at the Hooville General store they also have a barbecue hut.
Incubator update: 17 eggs with wiggling ducklings! So far so good, 2 weeks to go.🦆🐣
Candled the incubating duck eggs and many have embryos! I hope to get some video when they get a bit larger.
Since I have SO MANY duck eggs, I have decided to give hatching some a try. 19 in the incubator, 25 days to hatch. This is not a very successful venture, but these should be more fertile than the chicken attempts. .
