As of just after 9 p.m., the city council of California City voted to carry out the layoffs of 19 employees. The motion carried, 4-1, with council member Jim Creighton opposing.
Our story now has the updated news. The story includes reaction from Larry Brandenburg, a crime analyst for Cal City Police, and a statement from Mayor Kelly Kulikoff.

I had a lot of fun with this story. Desert tortoises are high priority at Edwards Air Force Base and even more now that the tortoises became listed as an endangered species in California by the state's Fish and Game Commission.

Theresa Oaks has resigned as California City Parks and Recreation manager, multiple sources who did not want to be named told me on Thursday.
Oaks’ last day will be June 7.
The continual threat of layoffs was among the reasons for her resignation, the sources told me.
Oaks became a fixture at community events over the last three years and directed several projects.
She was leading the efforts for the annual Tortoise Days. It had been originally scheduled earlier this month but postponed due to winds. The Tortoise Days festival is now tentatively scheduled for June 22-23. Tentatively is true since the parks and recreation department is losing its leader.
More on this story will be told in the coming days.

Carla Conry says she is resigning as a California City planning commissioner "due to the neglect of the previous City Clerk's office and City Attorney's Office."
She also accused city council members of ignoring incidents she reported or hiding her reports to protect others.

California City put up new signage at City Hall earlier this week. The new sign came as a gift from Carla Conry, a longtime Cal City resident and community activist. Conry (in the white top) helped place the new signage along with Mayor Kelly Kulikoff, council member Michael Kulikoff and acting city manager Latisha Lamberth.
