The Veteran Farmer Project (VFP) provides Veterans short workshops on sustainable farming practices and hands-on gardening
and farming experience. This collaboration between La Montanita Co-op, provides the initial training for Veterans to start or work at sustainable agriculture businesses and it provides a therapeutic garden space for veterans to learn to grow fresh produce. Since January 2012, the VFP has offered annual workshop series focusing on technical aspects of vegetable production and animal husbandry. In addition to on-going workshops, the VFP grows produce at the Alvarado Urban Farm year round. In our second growing season, the VFP gardens will supply a stand at the VA Farmers’ Market once a week and feed project participants. All veterans, active service and National Guard people are welcome and encouraged to participate in the program. The VA van offers rides to both the classes and garden site from the Albuquerque VA Campus upon request and availability. Contact John Shields to inquire about transportation. As you can see, there's a lot going on this week. If you can come by and help any time between 9 and noon, we'd love to see you there! In case you're not sure how to get to the farm:
-From the downtown ABQ area, take 4th Street north up to Solar (directly across from Sadie's).
-Turn left on Solar, and drive through the neighborhood until you get to Alvarado Elementary School.
-Immediately after Alvarado Elementary and before the bridge that crosses over a ditch, turn left and park alongside the ditch. There will be other cars there, so hopefully it's easy to find.
-Walk up the little hill, cross the footbridge, and you'll see the Rio Grande Community Farm. Our plot is at the end, so just walk along the Community Farm's path until you see us.
