West Wind Farm

West Wind Farm Providing a safe home for retired horses, with 24-hour turnout and daily loving care. In 2016 West Wind Farm closed its former Braddock Road location.

WWF no longer breeds or raises young stock; we now focus on providing a safe home for a few retired horses, mostly eventers, with 24-hour turnout and daily loving care at our Peach Orchard Lane location.

Sad news from West Wind Farm. On Sunday, February 4th, our beautiful Shenandoah Secret was taken by a fierce colic, likely caused by internal melanomas. We had 18 wonderful years with this sweet sensitive soul with the heart of a champion. She would rather run and jump than breathe, and tried to please her people every way possible. Having her at home in her retirement years was pure pleasure, and her gentle nicker and sassy dancing are desperately missed, already and for always. Rest in peace, my Princess.

We said good-bye to a dear friend this past week. Remy, owned and loved by Beth Fisk, was a sweet, gentle soul, one of the Bay Boys Club who graced our fields for many years. Rest happy and pain-free in heaven, Remy; we'll miss your kind nature and lovely presence, always. ⚘

We were delighted today to welcome home Secret and Lexi who returned from two months at the Nor Mar Farm rehabilitation center, under the skilled care of Joe and Brenda Godfrey. The girls both had been diagnosed with insulin resistance and alarmingly high sugar levels, not to mention body weights more suited to Clydesdales than prima donnas. They came home svelte and fit and sparkling with good health and good lab reports. We're glad to have them at home again, and eternally grateful to Nor Mar for the excellent results they produced and the expert care our mares received. We recommend Nor Mar whole-heartedly for equine rehab care.

Secret is pouting. The gates are open but she won't even go out on the field with her buddy Lexi. It's the dreaded grazing muzzle that saves her from overindulging in the rich pasture grass. I've explained that to her, but she just looks at me reproachfully and sighs. (I know that she'll wander out to the field and start nibbling, once there is not a sympathetic audience on hand.)

Spring has finally settled in (probably), the horses are all shiny with their winter scruffiness gone, grass is growing faster than we can mow it, and all the usual flowers are popping out a couple weeks earlier than usual. The horses are relaxing in the calm of evening - all is peaceful at West Wind Farm.
