***YOU MIGHT FIND THIS GROSS***

Not all discoveries in the nesting box are as fun and cute as fairy eggs. Two days ago I reached under a chicken to grab eggs and felt something gross and pulled my hand back quickly. After the chicken got up, I saw a weird clumpy thing, that reminded me of small bits of cooked chicken. 🤷‍♀️ Intrigued, I brought it inside for evaluation.
I’ve since determined that it was a “lash egg,” or something that comes out when a chicken has an infection in her oviduct, the part of the body where an egg starts. It can be a one time thing, and the chicken will be fine, or the chicken will get sick and die. I’ve yet to find a dead chicken so I think this was a one time thing. Either way, I found it interesting, albeit kind of gross.

We got a “fairy egg” today. Nope, not from a fairy, but from one of the hens. “Fairy egg” is just one of many terms used to refer to an egg laid by a newly laying hen that comes out unusual. Fairy eggs are usually super small and most often don’t contain a yolk.
When a young chicken begins to produce eggs, sometimes the order of the process gets mixed up inside of her. Her body can sometimes produce the hard shell of the egg before the yolk is added, or do the opposite and put several yolks into one egg. Double yolk anyone?
However, as the birds mature, their body settles into a rhythm and they start to lay eggs of a more uniform size with the expected one yolk, one white contents.

What better to do during a hot summer than play with wool? I saved a bag of wool after our March shearing and told myself I’d clean it up and try to make yarn this summer. 🤪 It’s been an interesting process. I’ve scoured(cleaned) the raw wool, and am now “carding” the wool with a set of brushes, essentially getting rid of any extra “stuff” in it and aligning the fibers. I ordered a drop spindle off Amazon and will try to spin yarn next…… stay tuned!

It’s HOT in Texas. Yesterday we had a “feels like” temp that hovered around 117 for a few hours. And chickens don’t sweat. 🥲 Despite fans, ice water and tubs of cool water for the flock to step in, one of our Golden Laced Wyandottes came down with heat stroke. She got a cool bath last evening, but sadly passed away overnight. Here she is enjoying her cool bath while Red looks on.

All three remaining lambs left for their new home today. 🥲Ricky, Lucy, and Snoopy joined Fred and Ethel and it makes me so happy to know they are all together again. They’ll have a great life with their new owner in Central Texas.

These two are DOUBLE TROUBLE. They escaped their pen last night due to a broken clasp and ran away. Thankfully we found them a few hours later, sopping wet and looking guilty. They must not have checked the weather before they left. 😜

Last fall, I started passing out a “chicken of the week” card to my customers. Each time someone buys eggs from me, they also get a card featuring a chicken in my flock, complete with a picture and some information regarding the hen’s breed or personality. It’s fun. It’s silly. And it definitely makes for fun conversations about our birds.

One year ago we ventured into bees. It’s been a crazy thing that has required way more work and money than we expected. Keeping them alive through the extreme summer heat and feeding them pounds upon pounds of sugar syrup has been a major undertaking. We have yet to harvest any honey, have been stung multiple times, and have learned a lot about this fascinating creature. Pictures and video of a hive capture in stories. 🐝🐝

Today was vet visit day and one of our mini donkeys, Thor, got castrated. Thor was suspicious to our intentions as soon as we got the halter out this morning, but with a little muscle power and ingenuity we got him haltered and vet ready. Thanks Dr Cofield!
