Last weekend we had a great show at the Dayton Fancy Feather! Last summer we jumped into a new breed and we spent all fall/winter grooming and raising birds to make our first big splash on the Bantam Wyandotte scene.

Our black boys did particularly well this show with a win for Best of Breed and Reserve RCCL in the Green Card show!

We are very happy to have this awesome clean leg breed to balance out our feather legged friends!🙂

Below we have two breeding pairs and their “best” offspring of the fall.

Our blue black pair have produced a few pretty blue and black babies. This Pullet always stands with confidence!

And in the next group you can see our pairing off a black roo and paint mom gave us a lovely paint Pullet.

Just a post about our silkies and their genetics.

Our black and blue birds all currently come from a line where they have both colors in their genetics. We started breeding 4 years ago, we had a very small flock and have focused on breeding for health first and beauty second.

The healthiest birds were our black/blue crosses so we bred accordingly. Along the way we have had beautiful dark blue, light blue, black and rarely a partridge (very rarely).

This information is very important to know if you may be looking for a show quality bird or breeder bird. Our black birds do come with a higher chance of breeding blue birds or having blue leakage, even if bred with black birds with a less “blue” genetic lineage.

Transparency is key in Silkie breeding! Even the purest show bloodlines can breed off colors or have imperfections. Here at Ropp farm we want you to know what you are getting! Breeding good birds is hard enough without all the facts!
