Catching up with On-farm Education Manager Shelby Hintz after our Fall Funtacular.
Thank you to everyone who came and had a great time! We learnef about bees, enjoyed live music, competed in relay races, planted garlic for the winter, wore flower crowns and hung out with our chickens!
We've had quite an October, and we're full of gratitude for everyone who helped ring in our 10th year of training the next wave of America farmers: Veterans. Thank you to our sponsor AMSG!

Thank you to Shelby and Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture for an amazing first lesson! Our kids loved learning to prepare soil, plant seeds and care for garden creatures (including the resident chickens). #experientallearning #homeschool #homeschoolcoop #sustainableag

We're getting excited for today's "Pick Your Own Flowers" event. Link in bio.
Here's a recap from our time in the garden a few weeks ago!
We recently caught up with Rich Faucher of Faucher Farms, based in Berryville, VA. He trained with Arcadia’s Veteran Farmer Program in 2019, and traveles from California every month for the Veteran Farmer Reserve.
He is now the proud owner of 80 acres and many many pigs 🐷
From our Veteran Farmer Reserve weekend this month! Our year-long program combines classroom and hands-on training with business training for those considering a future career in agriculture.
We visited one of our program's graduates, Dave Lauer, and his @silverkeyranch in Catlett, VA. We also visited the tiny piglets at @hsfarmsanctuary in Nokesville! 😍🐷
These folks put the community in the Route 1 Community Farm - which launched today at Arcadia, on the grounds of Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House and once the home of George Washington. More importantly this former slave plantation became a Quaker-led racially integrated co-operative free farm, 20 years before the Civil War.
Our new Community Farmers are writing the next chapter in food justice and food sovereignty. Many thanks to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Urban Agriculture Innovation Program and the National Trust for Historic Preservation for supporting Arcadia’s newest effort to make good food a reality for everyone.
Thanks to our beekeeper Allison for showing us the hives! 🐝 The first video is what she shared with us in 2022, and the second is from this week!
Beekeeping plays an important role in reducing greenhouse gases by supporting pollination of local and native plants ans crops. It reduces the need for crop and produce transportation!
Arcadia is excited to announce the return of our Hybla Valley Community Market!
Join us on April 27 at 11am at the Hybla Valley Community Center (7950 Audubon Avenue).
When we opened up our market last year in April, we had no clue it would grow into a bustling community space selling over $1,000 in local produce every week. Now we've been joined by Heidy's Pupusas, Shumaila's Kitchen, and other small businesses. Come check out these burgeoning businesses that our market helped cultivate!
The Hybla Valley Community Market is the spot to get fresh herbs, flowers, fruits, and vegetables grown at Arcadia, plus eggs, meats, and honey supplied by graduates of the Arcadia Veteran Farmer Program (synergies!).
