A Family Story

Anne and I met and later married in 1980. We shared many passions including the love of things that grow. We both had businesses in the plant industry and settled in the Columbus suburb of Clintonville.

In 1986, Anne, I and our three children came to this farm and 100 acres of corn. The dream of a tree farm had never gone away. The interest rates at the time made it a challenge, but in true Messerall form, we buckled down and made it happen.

We joined the Ohio Christmas Tree Association. At the first meeting we attended the talk was all about the “new” Canaan fir tree. We were already there! We had slept under the parent trees while camping in the Canaan Valley. My first experience in Canaan Valley West Virginia was in 1971 as a college student studying the botany and geology of this unique area. I started college to be an engineer and finished with a B.S. in forestry. Many of our first seedlings planted were Canaan Fir. Our current home and barn are in that first fir tree field. In the beginning, many people came just because we had this beautiful variety. The excellent needle retention, straight trunk and aroma made this tree a hit year after year.

So this is our home. Anne and I raised our family here. We are both retired from full time jobs now and with our children, their spouses and 8 grandchildren, look forward to continuing the farm.
