Dean Berte, Kossuth County Farm Bureau voting delegate, represented Kossuth County at the Iowa Farm Bureau Summer Policy Conference held September 9-10 in West Des Moines.

The conference serves as the final step in Farm Bureau's grassroots policy development process, bringing together voting delegates from across the state to determine policy direction and consider resolutions on issues important to Iowa agriculture and rural communities.

As part of the grassroots process, delegates discussed and debated timely topics that were raised by Farm Bureau members throughout the year. Through discussion and voting, delegates helped establish official Iowa Farm Bureau policy and identified issues to advance for consideration by the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Farm Bureau's policy development process begins at the county level, where members identify concerns and submit policy recommendations. Those recommendations are then reviewed through a series of discussions and votes, culminating at the Summer Policy Conference where delegates establish statewide policy positions.

The policies adopted during the conference will guide Iowa Farm Bureau's advocacy efforts and help shape discussions on agricultural and rural issues at both the state and national levels.

The Kossuth County Farm Bureau Board hosted a Rural Roads Safety Program for Algona High School freshman students to educate them about driving safely in a rural community where large farm equipment shares the roads.

Students had the opportunity to sit in a combine, sprayer, and semi-truck to identify operator blind spots and learn the importance of maintaining safe distances between farm equipment and automobiles. New this year, an Iowa State Patrol officer joined the program to discuss side-by-side safety.

Thank you to KC Nielsen for providing the John Deere combine, Algona Community School District for allowing us to host the program at the school, and the Kossuth County Farm Bureau Board members for taking the time to educate these students about rural road safety.

No driving activities were conducted during the program.
