Edelen Farms

Edelen Farms Edelen Farms is a family owned, second-generation farm that promotes healthy agriculture. As a young boy, Greg Edelen longed to be a farmer.

He went to college and graduated with a degree in Animal Science. He married Lauren and they eventually settled in Alice, Texas where they ran a business that provided the capital to purchase land in the country. In the late 1980’s
Greg began farming and sold the business in town. Their first five children grew up working with their parents. They all learned how to drive farm vehicles, use a hoe,

stack hay in the barn, round up the cows, etc. Years later, those kids grew up and moved on to lives of their own. In 1995, Greg and Lauren moved out to the country with their newest edition to the family- Andrew. In the late 90’s the price of commodities was low and Greg had been reading in The Stockman Grass Farmer, about producers selling beef directly off the farm to the consumer. He recognized that to be something that could make their future brighter. So with their steers, they had one butchered and were off on the adventure of direct marketing grass-fed beef. They began selling at a Farmers’ Market in Corpus Christi, TX but, they aspired for more business. They then moved their efforts to Boerne and San Antonio, TX. In 2000 they began expanding their farming opportunities. They added a hen yard to their farm and began raising broilers which they butcher themselves and packaged whole. The next big item was local raw honey purchased in barrels from a local beekeeper. Another year, Andrew planted a large winter garden of lettuce, spinach, chard, etc. It was beautiful and the rains came as needed and they worked hard and sold plenty. They bought a variety of items from local producers throughout the years to keep the table at the market full of healthy things to buy. It was hard work and long hours in which all of the children- and eventually the grandchildren- participated. Andrew grew up during the Farmers’ Market years. The other children and grandchildren would come home to the farm at different times throughout the year to help with what needed doing. When Andrew graduated high school, the military called, and Greg worked exclusively in the Coastal Bend. Greg spent almost 16 years working every weekend selling at Farmers’ Markets. It is thrilling for Greg and Lauren to have Andrew coming home to start a second generation of selling grass-fed meats, eggs, and more- and who knows who else in the family might join him.

Another year of the Jim Wells County Ag Fair happened last week, and it officially solidified Alister’s current obsession with combines and every other large green piece of machinery. 🚜💚

To be fair, it’s hard not to be impressed by equipment taller than you are.

Moments like this are one reason we try not to rush out and mow every wildflower.

Those “weeds” and tiny flowers are food and shelter for pollinators like butterflies and bees — the little creatures that help gardens grow and crops produce food.

Sometimes leaving a patch of flowers untouched can make a big difference.

The farm may look a little wilder this time of year, but to us, that’s a sign of life. 🌼🐝🌾

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there — especially the ones carrying the whole crew on their backs. 🦂💛

Even in the animal world, mamas are tough, protective, hardworking, and endlessly patient.

Today we’re celebrating ALL the moms.Thank you for all you carry, even when nobody sees it.

The hens rotate who gets personally tucked in at night by Alister 😂
As you can tell they’re pretty used to him taking care of them.
Also, 👀 check out all this grass. 3 inches two or so weeks ago really made a difference. It’s not enough to sustain so keep praying for rain but we sure are glad for what we got!

❓ FAQ: “Do you use hormones or antibiotics?”

Short answer: No hormones. No routine antibiotics. 👇

💊 Antibiotics: We do not use antibiotics routinely. Our animals are raised in a way that supports their health naturally through good nutrition, clean living conditions, and low-stress handling.

That said, we also believe in responsible animal care. If an animal ever NEEDS treatment to prevent suffering, we will treat it. Period.

👉 But here’s the difference: That animal would not go into our regular meat supply.

In fact, in the decades we’ve been farming, we can only remember one time needing antibiotics: a momma rabbit that came to us with a severe case of mites from where she originated. That’s it.

Our animals are raised so healthfully that, thankfully, it just hasn’t been needed.

💛 Our goal is simple: Raise healthy animals the right way from the start, so interventions are rarely needed—and you can feel confident about what you’re feeding your family.

“If you’ve ever bought meat from the store… you’ve probably stood there wondering what all those labels actually mean.” 👀

“Grass-fed.”
“Natural.”
“No antibiotics.”
“Product of USA.”

Sounds great… but here’s the thing 👇

Most of those labels are either loosely regulated or don’t mean what you think they mean.

🐄 “Grass-Fed” can still mean animals were grain-finished.
📦 “Product of USA” can mean it was just processed here—not raised here.
🌿 “Natural” doesn’t really tell you how the animal was raised at all.

It’s confusing on purpose.

That’s why knowing your farmer matters. 💛

When you buy directly from a farm like ours, you’re not guessing—you know:
✔️ how the animals were raised
✔️ what they were fed
✔️ how they were treated

No buzzwords. No marketing tricks. Just real food you can trust.

If you’ve ever had questions about where your meat comes from, we’re always happy to answer them—just ask!

🌎 Happy Earth Day 🌱

Out here on the farm, caring for the earth isn’t a trend—it’s something we live out every single day.

At Edelen Farms, we believe good farming should heal the land, not harm it. That means:

🌾 Rotating our animals to naturally fertilize the soil
🐄 Raising livestock in a way that mimics nature
🌱 Building healthier soil year after year
💧 Being mindful of the resources we use

When the land is healthy, everything else follows—our animals, our food, and ultimately, our families.

Earth Day is a great reminder that the small choices we make matter… including where your food comes from 💛

Thank you for supporting local, sustainable farming and being part of what we’re building out here.

🐔🥚 EGG MYTH BUSTING TIME 🥚🐔

There’s a LOT of confusion out there about eggs… so let’s clear a few things up 👇

🚫 Myth #1: You need a rooster for hens to lay eggs
Nope! Hens lay eggs all on their own. A rooster is only needed if you want fertilized eggs (aka baby chicks). No rooster = no chicks, but still plenty of eggs.

🏷️ Myth #2: Store labels always mean what you think
Egg cartons can be… misleading. Here’s a quick breakdown:

• “Cage-Free” – Hens aren’t in cages, but they’re usually still inside a barn with limited space.
• “Free-Range” – Technically means they have access to the outdoors… but that could be a small door to a tiny area.
• “Pasture-Raised” – This is the gold standard, but not tightly regulated. It should mean hens are outside on grass, foraging naturally.

👉 Bottom line: Labels don’t always tell the full story.

🥚 Myth #3: Brown eggs are healthier than white eggs
Nope again! The color just depends on the breed of the chicken. Nutrition is the same—the real difference comes from what the hens are eating and how they’re raised.

🌾 Myth #4: All eggs are basically the same
Not even close. Eggs from pasture-raised hens (like ours) often have:
✔️ darker yolks
✔️ richer flavor
✔️ better nutrient profile

Because happy hens eating bugs, grass, and a quality feed = better eggs. Simple as that.
