🌿 Joy Lives in the Little Things 🌿

Today I stood in my garden in October and felt my heart still for a moment.

🫛 The very last gift of green beans of the season...
🥬 The very first kohlrabi and cabbage of the season at the same time...
🍅 And fresh tomatoes in October!

Even when sorrow is deep, the little things can make us smile and live in the moment.

Here's what I'm learning: joy isn't found in big milestones. It is in the quiet moments, like dirt under my fingernails and a slow, grateful walk down the garden rows appreciating each w**d I have not had time to pull.

Intentional living is simply choosing to notice and say, "This is enough. This is wonderful." 🍂

🌿 First Collard Greens of the fall are IN! 🌿

Just harvested and getting ready to hit the pan: our first batch of fall collards, grown right here by The Twisted Root in Fentress County. 🙌

Collards are a traditional southern classic, and we know why! 😉
We keep it simple: sautéed in coconut oil with a splash of apple c***r vinegar and a pinch of salt. That's it. Nothing fancy, just good food doing what it's always done.
Like it hot? Toss in a few spicy chilies and let 'em sing. 🌶️🔥

Cooler mornings, fresh-picked greens, and greens on the stove.
That's fall in the Upper Cumberland. 🍂

🥥 This morning we did a thing... 🥥

We made dairy free, sugar free, VEGAN yogurt — and it is thick, rich, and creamy. Like, genuinely amazing.

Here's the backstory: we have looked at EVERY organic dairy free yogurt on the market. Every. Single. One. except for Harmless Harvest, every one of them has ingredients we are just not okay feeding our family.

But honestly? We don't even love buying Harmless Harvest either:
1️⃣ We have to drive hours to get it
2️⃣ It's expensive
3️⃣ It sits in plastic
4️⃣ We don't fully trust ingredients when we don't personally know the producers

So... naturally, we made it ourselves. 😄

Dairy yogurt is pretty straightforward, but we'd never attempted a coconut version before because it seemed so much more complicated. Looking at the branded ingredient lists, we assumed we'd need binders, gums, gelatin, all kinds of extra stuff to get that thick, creamy texture.

But NO! The only ingredients are:
🥥 Organic coconut meat
💧 Water
🦠 A couple scoops of Harmless Harvest yogurt as a starter (you could also use a probiotic pill or a commercial starter instead!)

That's it!! The fermentation actually takes out most of the coconut flavor, so now we have a base we can use on chili, beans, or anywhere we'd want "sour cream." We also blended some with vanilla and a small amount of our raw local honey and... WOW. 🤩

🍠 Guess what time it is?? 🍠

It's SWEET POTATO TIME!! We pulled the very first ones out of the ground today, and we are so excited! Get your orders in by the case — you are not going to want to miss these!

We're also sharing a little peek into today's harvest from the Woods, along with some cozy, calm-day food preparations happening here on the homestead. 🍂

On the menu today:

🌿 Biscuits (gluten free, organic, dairy free, sugar free) alongside Ghost Peppers, Chives and Moringa we harvested this morning for our egg scramble (along with dried tomatoes and close to the last of our green beans).

🎃 Delicata squash, baked and then sautéed with cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg

🧅 And yes... we are STILL preparing leeks and slicing up the last of our watermelon! Honestly the best leek harvest we've ever had — we can hardly believe it!

Lots of goodness happening around here today. Delicious Sweet Potato creations will be on the way!! 💛
