Winter Solstice on the farm
The longest night, the quietest pause. Snow falling softly, dogs crunching snow, and the land resting before the return of light.

The chrysanthemums in the old clawfoot tub are beginning to whisper that fall is here. The flowers are still growing, but not with the same summer pace a reminder that the season is winding down. It feels like the right moment to reflect: to celebrate what thrived, to learn from what we’ll do differently next year, and to simply appreciate all that has been created here. The farm teaches us in quiet ways that growth comes in cycles, that lessons arrive with every bloom, and that the gentler pace of autumn has its own kind of beauty.

On my daily walks near the nature preserve, the air is rich with the unmistakable scent of honeysuckle, sweet, heady, and nostalgic.
Honeysuckle (genus Lonicera) is a fast-growing vine or shrub known for its tubular flowers and strong, sweet fragrance. It’s a favorite of hummingbirds and bees, offering nectar-filled blooms from late spring through summer. The scent is strongest in the evening, when it calls to nighttime pollinators like moths.
While there are many species of honeysuckle, not all are native and some, like Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica), can become invasive in our region, crowding out native plants. Still, their presence along woodland edges and fence lines is a familiar part of summer in Pennsylvania.
Even though they don’t last in a bouquet, I love encountering them where they grow naturally — part of the living rhythm between the farm and the forest.

We can’t wait for our first event of the season!! Next Saturday from 10am - 4pm at ArtsQuest in Bethlehem, PA.
