Big expansion plans are underway. We are officially prepping the soil to add 90 new market garden beds, measuring 30 inches by 50 feet, for next season.
We just finished cover cropping this new ground with a heavy seeding of winter rye. Our long-term game plan to open up this space while protecting the soil biology involves a deliberate, low-till transition:
1. Initial one-time tillage to establish the zone
2. Plant a heavy winter rye cover crop (just completed)
3. Crimp the rye in the spring
4. Tarp it with silage tarp to help terminate the winter rye
5. Top each block with a deep layer of compost mulch
By skipping continuous tilling and letting the rye and tarps do the heavy lifting, we are building long-term soil health from day one.
