The North American Camel Ranch Owners Association has been keeping a close eye on legislative issues that could affect the US camel industry. As the executive team continues to monitor these issues and maintain contact with USDA, here is an update for the first quarter of 2026.
FARM BILL: The Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026, more commonly known as The Farm Bill, governs U.S. agricultural, nutrition, and conservation policy. Key components include commodity support, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), crop insurance, environmental conservation programs, and rural development.
We have had questions about whether or not The Farm Bill could be an avenue for which to have camels classified as domesticated. Unfortunately, as it has been explained to us, the reclassification of camels from wild/exotic to farm animals falls outside the Agriculture Committee's jurisdiction.
USDA: Since 2023 NACROA has been championing the reclassification of camels from wild/exotic to farm animals and, to this end, we've had numerous meetings with USDA and they made it very clear reclassification of camels is not a legislative issue, rather, it’s one that the Department itself has the authority to change. NACROA continues to build on the many meetings we've had with USDA since 2023 and enjoy liaising with the Department of Agriculture whose policymakers can effect such reclassification.
How can you help?
* In all communications, whether in person with the public visiting with your camels, in media interviews, or in social media posts, use the terms “farm animal” and “livestock” and avoid using the word “exotic” as a gentle reminder about the trajectory we want to follow as a community.
* Any time you’re posting on social media about your camels, please tag USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service as well as NACROA. You can also invite your local politicians to your events, whether they be representing local, county, state, or federal offices. We already know camels provide incredible photo ops, now let those in positions of influence know, too!
NACROA is hopeful for this important change, but it takes all of us. Together we can create enough awareness that we can turn the tide.
