Alsea Acre Goat Cheese

Alsea Acre Goat Cheese Since 1994, goat cheese made on our sustainable farm, using milk from our own herd of happy goats.

Alsea Acre specialty cheeses are produced on a small goat dairy located in an isolated valley of Oregon's Coast Range where mild winters and cool summers are ideal for the production of European style cheeses.

Hi, tonight I invited a lot of friends and cousins to follow this page. In case you are checking to see "who is this? Why am I getting it?" Well it's me, your friend or your cousin, Nancy Chandler.
I'm retired now but the photos and videos are still pretty amazing and interesting. I loved these goats and this life. Though I was tired. Very tired. 😁.

Well I'm back on the groups members list and I can comment but the previous posts are gone. 500 likes! Overwhelming. A few other members who followed here have reached out. One said maybe the group was hacked. Goat drama? Well, life goes on.

I joined a new group a few days ago. "Raising Goats". I made a post about raising my goats for over 30 years. I included lots of photos and captions. As of earlier today I had 500 likes. Dozens of new friend requests. Over a dozen new followers of this page. Lots of PM. It was wonderful to feel like I could help new people and to be distracted from election stress.

Now, I can't look at that group page. The new followers are gone. The friend requests are gone. The comments are all gone. The notifications are gone. Did I get kicked out of the group? Why?

Dana Wilson this is Sarah! ♥️

First baby of the year born 2/16/20, my Moms birthday so I gave this girl my Moms name, Sarah. My Mom loved seeing the babies when they visited. One year we had a big gathering of about 20 people for dinner while she was here. I also had a bottle baby hanging out in the house and while people were milling about in the kitchen filling their plates with hot food the baby goat was also milling about. Mom said "Raise your hand if you've ever been to a dinner party where there was a goat in the kitchen!"

I haven't posted anything since before Covid blew up my nice life. I've been very lucky in not having experienced Covid personally but it's affect on the farm has been significant.

I had to make commitments for 2020 farmers markets in early March. At that point nobody knew how bad things would get but I felt at my age, going to market every week would be a high risk for me. No markets? Big hit to the farm income. No problem, I had lots of loyal chefs and restaurant customers.... oh.... wait.... a lot of them closed, or had limited menus which were made from simpler, less expensive ingredients. 😯 Oh no! Another big hit to farm income.

At that point it made no sense to hire people to make cheese I couldn't sell so everything went on hiatus. For the first time in 35 years I got to just enjoy my goats.

I do have babies due this spring and I will just see how things develop. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Get vaccinated. Thank you for the support I have received over the first 30 years. ❤🐐❤

Another year, the barn is filled and everything is out of the field before the rain that is predicted for tomorrow arrives. No matter what happens, goats will eat! Yay! Thank you, Sue, Gary, Jeremy, JaR, Eric, Grant and Nate for gitin'er done! Mr. Moose the McNab had a great time running the field.

Skylar, son of one of our goat milkers/caretakers, is sharing his "something new" with his teacher and classmates on Zoom. Juliette is Skylar's first goat and his Brother, Jude, has Juliette's brother, Rocky. I love this whole group of new young farm families becoming established in Alsea. Skylar will be able to join the 4H dairy goat project in the future. This will make 26 years of helping 4H kids get started with nice animals.

These two kids are one hour old in this photo. This was Saturday. You can see that even at one hour, they are up, clean, and have already nursed. About half of the does have kidded. This year the babies are extra cute.

So far I haven't started milking yet. The Corvallis Saturday farmers market begins April 18. I've opted out of the first two markets. I'm going to see how the market is dealing with the new "shop and go home" guidance. I'm very confident in Rebecca's efforts to keep us all safe. I'm more concerned to see how shoppers handle it all. If I decide to attend the market in May, I can begin milking and making chevre then. For now, I'm letting the babies stay on the Moms and drink it all. By the way, this is not my barn, just a little play shed they enjoy. They like it so much they ate it!

Just when I was having a down day, baby Nigerians are born to bring back my focus to why my life is so great. A boy and a girl. First time mama and the first kids out of Romeo, the Nigerian buck I got from Linda Montanez's granddaughter, Hayden. She had them out in the shed in some dirt, so I grabbed em up, took them into the sheltered barn, cleaned them up by rubbing them with clean hay, dipped the navels in iodine, then lured Moma into the barn by holding them and tugging the tails so they squealed and MoMA heard them. Shes tending to them, licking them clean and they are both standing. Looks good!
