Officially completed seeding (at least for the first time). The weather afforded us the opportunity to drag out planting over the months of March, April, May, and June, encompassing a 65-day window. We went from below-normal rainfall in 13 of 14 months to accumulating over 14 inches of rain in April and May. They always say no two farming years are alike. Thankful to be done with the planting part. 👍

Last night we were fortunate to celebrate our annual Post Harvest Dinner to thank our crew who helped us this fall. We only had a couple of folks unable to attend.
We also celebrated 25 years of Kevin Tappendorf working with us. Kevin has gone from a part time 21 year old kid to an indispensable part of our family farm. Thanks Kevin.

Switched back to corn over the weekend. The photo of us with machinery parked and eating together as a crew is reminiscent of how we used to eat almost every evening in the field.
We probably don’t do it often enough these days. For efficiency, we stop the machines long enough to get handed supper and then take advantage of auto steer to eat while we continue harvest.

Frequently, our farm's bean harvest is overshadowed in photographs. I usually think the dust detracts the photos too much.
However, in an effort to provide a balanced representation, we have included a few soybean photos from this afternoon.
Due to the fact that we have received less than an inch of rainfall since July 25th, the beans are retaining a significant number of leaves, which contributes to the excessive dust generated during harvest. It’s a dirty job….as they say.

Harvest operations commenced a week ago, but we were primarily focused on locating fields that were ready for harvesting. The pace of operations has accelerated over the past couple of days. We are eagerly anticipating significant rainfall within the next week, primarily for fire prevention purposes. Receiving less than half an inch of rain in 8 weeks is less than ideal as we enter the harvest season. We wish all farmers a safe and healthy harvest.
