🀞🀞🀞 Here's hoping the goats don't realize that the fence is NOT electrified and they could so easily eat my (super tasty, I'm sure) baby fruit trees in the back yard πŸ˜…

It might just look like lawn grass to you, but I bet the cheese made tomorrow with today's milk will be superb πŸπŸ§€

You'll have to catch me Rochester Farmers Markets this winter to give it a try! In the meantime, Radish Farm Stop is freshly stocked (and freshly opened!) with cheeses made during the summer of 2025.

Our redwing blackbird nest wasn't successful, but here are some baby robins from a nest that was! I spotted 3 fledglings in total.

Foxy found them before me and even had one in her mouth 🫨 Luckily, I was right there and called her off it before she could do amy damage.

I've been holding onto this brushy paddock for a while, knowing it would come in handy during hot weather. It's close to the shed so the goats have easy access to shade and fresh water.

They love it! Boogers had her entire body immersed in a burdock plant. There's clover and burning nettle, grass and king w**d, thistles and lambs quarter!

Diverse plants should make for some tasty cheese. Crazy to think that cheese made during the hottest part of summer is what you'll be eating during the coldest part of next winter πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅πŸπŸ§€πŸ₯ΆπŸ₯Ά

Day 10 and our fun little follow along has ended in tragedy. The entire nest, empty 😞

I know. It's all a part of nature. But it's still heartbreaking.

According to the internet, extreme heat is very hard on red wing blackbirds. Especially the babies.

They overheat, get dehydrated, fall out of the nest trying to escape the body heat of their nest mates. The mama bird also has to give them shade most of the day instead of finding food.

Pretty much, these birds agree with me: the heat sucks.

But there is a little bit of hope - daddy bird flew overhead as I was filming this bit, screaming at me like usual. There's possibly still time for them to lay another clutch of eggs. Hopefully with better weather and/or more shade. I'll be keeping an eye out for it!

Stay hydrated out there, folks 😎

Day 9 and we're down a chicken in the nest. And I doubt we'll see the 4th egg hatch. Nothing guaranteed in the nest of a red wing blackbird.

Day 8 and we still have 3 babies in the nest.

You can her mama bird yelling at me from above, so I got outta there quickly!

Maybe that 4th egg will hatch, but most likely not.

Day 7 and we now have 3 babies in the nest! It would be fun to have all 4 eggs hatch, but 75% is pretty spectacular, too.

I can tell that mama bird is reluctant to leave the nest, more protective of her fragile babies. I'm respectful and keep my visits infrequent and short. We can be more nosy in a few days when the babies are a bit more resilient.
