We had the absolute cutest surprise this weekend at Spicy Acres!

One of our quail hatched an egg - ALL ON HER OWN! If you know quail, you know how exciting that is.

Well, here are some more fun facts about them and a picture of our sweet little Pinon, as Kempson named it!

• Coturnix quail only take about 17–18 days to hatch — talk about a quick turnaround!
• Quail chicks hatch with their eyes open, covered in fluffy down, and ready to start exploring almost immediately.
• Hatching is a process! After making that first tiny hole in the shell, a chick may rest for HOURS before “zipping” its way around the egg and finally breaking free.
• A newly hatched quail is only about the size of a big bumblebee. Tiny doesn't even begin to cover it. 🥹
• And they don't stay tiny for long — Coturnix quail can be basically full grown in just 6–8 weeks, with hens sometimes beginning to lay eggs around that age!

We're feeling a bit, pre-ordery, if you will. What do y'all say? It's been a little bit and I know some folks like to wait for our orders to open first. So let's do it! Opening orders today, they will close Monday September 28th, and deliveries/pickup will be October 1st!

WE HAVE MORE BABIES!!

Ginger had her kids, one boy and one girl.
Kempson has named the know Knight - subject to change - and Annabel named the girl Petunia. Ginger is doing good and the babies are happy and healthy!

We hope y'all had a great Easter! We spent is doing all kinds of things around the house, flying kites, smoking a pork loin, garden prep and so much more!

We also dyed our quail eggs this year! Ask how hard those were to find, we loved it and will definitely be doing this every year!

WE HAVE MORE BABIES!

We had a long weekend and got home last night to two new kids! All 4 legs accounted for here lol

Names are pending, but Oreo has been so good with them! They are the sweetest little two and already love attention ♥️

Just placed our meat chicken order! Time to get the little brooder pen ready for them to get here next week.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to grow and harvest our own foods. This year, that is HUGE on our list. Supporting local farmers and ranchers, while also trying to make everything we can from scratch and truly just bringing back old traditions.
It wasn't broken, it didn't need replacing. It just took time and still takes lots of time. Time I am so grateful to spend doing this life!

I'll update y'all as soon as the pen is ready and they are here!

A little goat update! We unfortunately lost one other baby, he looks like he might have been smashed... first time mom probs...

However!!! The light of our story and probably new barrel buddy.

Remember when I said we had one that was extra special? Well, here she is!

We have affectionately named her Tripod🩷! For obvious reasons...

She is strong, she is feisty, she eats like a champ, and is just trying to figure it all out! You can't miss what you never had, so she is learning how to get around and honestly doing a great job!

I know some will wonder about Tripod, and this is what I found. Goats may be born with three legs primarily due to congenital deformities often linked to the absorption or failure of a twin fetus in utero. Given she was a first time nanny, we knew things could be a little weird.

Sweetie had her babies! 3 total, but one unfortunately didn't make it. The other two are thriving so far and one is just a little *extra* special! We'll share more about that little one soon! Sweetie is being so good and just trying to figure it all out 🫶🏻

We're gonna have BABIES!

Chuck - our pygmy buck - sure got after it! So far we have 3 possibly 4 nannies bred! They should kid a few weeks apart, but we will keep y'all posted!

I guess we better get to building a nanny pen now!
