For the first time in 113 years, Hunt’s Orchard will not be opening this fall.
Hunt’s Orchard began in Wathena, KS back in 1906. Through the years multiple locations were part of the family: Hunt’s Orchard St Joseph, Hunt’s Orchard Rushville, the Chemical and Seed shop near Altec and of course, the Hunt’s Grandview Orchard in Amazonia.
Beginning in 1965, Glen Carneal, and later his son, John, handled the daily work of the orchards. Each orchard had its own store and activities.
The Carneals along with their friends and family entertained untold thousands with shows, music, games, activities, field trips and hay rides. Many repeat customers came and brought their children and eventually their grandchildren for a fun fall day.
Eventually everything was consolidated to the Amazonia location as simply “Hunts Orchard”. Interstate I-29 made it an easy-to-spot place -even if it did cut the orchard in half with its on/off ramp of I-29S exit 60!
After the 2016 season, John Carneal and his wife, Brenda, announced their retirement. Their daughters, who most orchard-goers watch grow up over the decades, had families of their own and it was time to play with grand and great-grand kids!
The business was then purchased by the Miller family of Andrew county. They ran it for three years before deciding not to continue with the Hunt family.
Currently the entire Amazonia property is closed and listed for sale.
John Carneal still does some tinkering! You can find (and buy) some of his creations and restorations at Ol' John's Antiques & Vintage Decor. His youngest daughter, Jackie, is still fiddlin’. You can find her at Jackie Miller Music. She plays for events like weddings, funerals, or other private gatherings.
