It’s been an exciting milking week😂 Starting back into milking after almost two years off and with a new set up has been a humbling adventure to say the least, and we are finding a better way to do things every day. Just keeping it real with y’all! It’s a beautiful experience and one of my favorite things to do on the homestead, but milking is not without its scary moments.

But was it worth it to see that I got a completely full half gallon? Oh yeah it was.

Another day, another tincture.

So many things are in bloom right now, and these trees are an easy to identify, and plentiful (and invasive) source of flowers and bark that soothe nerves, improve mood, and promote sleep.

Would you use mimosa tincture?

Our mornings and evenings now revolve around the calves😅 so we figured we might as well work on gentling them. Tallow has made a lot of progress already. Sometimes it’s just about finding the right scratching spot🥰

What are you learning you like these days?

In June of 2021, hundreds of First Responder and Law Enforcement families sent us notes from all across the country to remind us that we were not alone, and tell my husband that he was seen and loved, and his life was valuable as he battled chronic pain and complications of an on duty traumatic brain injury that almost claimed his life when the mental war to push through became too much. At our darkest moment, those notes were a tangible reminder that we were not alone.

Now we do our best to bring that same support and trauma recovery resources to other First Responders who are injured on duty, or undergoing a mental health crisis due to career trauma build-up, and we need YOUR help.

Help us provide 3 officers with a TANGIBLE reminder that they are supported and seen as they begin a long (and honestly lifelong) journey of recovery, which will go on long after the news, and even the Department has moved on.

If you would like to contribute challenge coins, please DM us for the mailing address💙

If YOU need support, or for more information about our Critical Incident Fund and the work we do, please reach out to us. We can only have your 6 if you let us.

So let’s talk about what happened, because really it wasn’t Jenny’s fault, or mine.

We’ve already established that Tallow is a pain in the butt when he nurses. He slams her udder with his head (normal behavior) harder than any calf I’ve ever seen. He and I were on opposite sides of Jenny, but he reached under across to the two teats I was working on and smacked her. Hard.

So she smacked back. And good for her. I can’t stand a cow that doesn’t correct that behavior in a healthy calf.

Only problem was that she didn’t kick Tallow.

She kicked me.

Up my entire arm, back down it, and then came down on my knee and knocked me backwards.

Did I yell? Absolutely. And then I was just instantly grateful that I always do my best to milk with my head back, where she didn’t nail that. If she had, I would have been out cold in that barn for who knows how long.

Jenny is a good cow. She was doing what a cow does. Really she was doing what a human does too when surprised with pain. Stuff like this is par for the course. And honestly it keeps things exciting.

Does it make me question if milking is worth it? Not at all.

Does it make me question if milking with Tallow present is worth it? Heck yeah.

Do we give up? Nope.

Do we re-evaluate the safety/reward ratio of the situation? Yup.

We might just need to wait to milk till Tallow is weaned. Or once her cut is healed up fully, just milk and then let her in with Tallow. Who knows.

But the lesson to learn is never to give up. Face the challenges, swallow the pain of yesterday, let it inform tomorrow, but don’t let it stop you💙

I still can’t get my phone to publish reels for me, but here is an update on the Flemish Giant crew. They are now just over 2 months old, and almost 3/4s the size of their mother rabbit.

Chunkers with happy round bellies, and beautiful coats, long ears and wide feet.

Do you remember when they fit inside the palm of our hand?

Helped Embee walk out of some of his wool today. We’re getting to shearing much later than we’d have liked to this year, but better late than never.

Our sweet boy stood so still for me, and despite not being able to find our clippers I was able to shear half of him with my orange fabric scissors before it was time to head off on a couple errands😅

If you learn nothing else from us, we hope you learn that there’s always a lesser known way to get something done when there’s a will😂

I repeat, we are using DAYLILLIES, NOT TRUE LILLIES.

Please get a certain and positive ID on your plants before consuming them.

With that out of the way😅
This was such a fun and quick little project, and I hope you enjoyed and learned something new just like I did!

Curiosity can lead to some really cool discoveries. Don't know what a plant can be used for? Look it up! At worst you'll find out it's no good for eating, but at best you'll discover it as a new ally in your medicine cabinet or pantry!

Do you have daylillies growing near you?
