“How the heck do you grow shrimp in Iowa?!” 🍤

Fair question.

So we put Sarah on the spot to answer all the frequently asked questions.

Here are the questions she answers:
"Do they contain any antibiotics, chemicals or additives?"
"Shrimp in Iowa ... how is that even possible?"
"How fresh are they?"
"Where are your farms located?"
"How long will they last in the fridge once thawed?"
"Are they raised indoors or outdoors?"
"Do I need to peel or devein them?"
"Isn't farm raised shrimp low quality?"
"Are they sushi grade?"
"What do they taste like?"
"Are they actually any good?"
"Saltwater or freshwater?"
"How do I cook them?"
"Are they sustainable?"
"What do the shrimp eat?"
"Can I refreeze the shrimp once thawed?"
"Are they organic?"

Midland Co. Origin Story 🤍

Sarah came to Iowa from New England to study agriculture at Iowa State, while Jackson grew up in Ames. Both worked in agriculture entrepreneurship, in college, Jackson was already working on land based aquaculture while Sarah was working on global agriculture development. They met at Iowa State in 2014, got married in 2017, and kept building side by side from there.

In 2018, Jackson launched Midland Co. with one goal: use algae to help treat wastewater in land-based aquaculture systems. Not long after, Matt joined the team while still attending Iowa State. With an aquaculture background of his own, Matt had already worked internationally on an aquaponics system in Malaysia and served as a nursery manager at a tilapia farm in Iowa. His hands-on experience in fish farming and system management helped transform Jackson’s original vision into a working operation. Sarah came on in the first year, bringing strategy, operations, project planning, and a whole lot of the behind-the-scenes glue to keeps things moving.

What made Midland work from the start was the balance of Jackson’s innovation, Matt’s expertise, and Sarah’s ability to connect the dots. Midland became exactly what it set out to be: a blend of New England seafood and Iowa agriculture. Today, the business is rapidly expanding, and they are even going back to Sarah home state of New Hampshire to build a shrimp farm.
