RIP Cheryl Kellert

We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of longtime winemaker and vineyard operator Cheryl Kellert, of Gray Ghost Vineyards in Amissville.

She helped run the scenic destination and agribusiness spot alongside her husband, Al, for the past 40 years. A former journalist and a talented musician, Cheryl was a mother of two, Amy and Al, and a grandmother.

The vineyard couple won many awards over the years including the Distinguished Alumni Award from their alma mater, Southern Illinois University, in 2023.

The longtime Star-Exponent subscribers told the Star-Exponent their years of winemaking at Gray Ghost has been a very rewarding experience.

“It’s given us the opportunity to make so many lasting friendships as well as making it possible to give back to a community we love."

To All Our Beloved Friends,
On behalf of Amy, Al and myself, I wish to thank all of your for the love and kindness you have shown us these past very difficult days.

I cannot imagine suffering a greater loss than losing Cheryl. And yet, I cannot think of someone more deserving of where she is today.

As hard as this has been, I doubt we could have made it through without each of you. You have truly been a blessing to us and one which we will cherish the rest of our lives.
