August chicks have arrived! Spring weather has been a formidable opponent this year...new life on the farm is always a great morale booster. Fingers crossed that our summer chicks bring warmer weather and less rain.

Poultry waterer hack incoming!

This literally blew my mind yesterday when "we saw it on the internet" actually worked 🀯 Our egg layers have been next level messy shaking the 5 gallon bucket waterer we had set up inside the coop so it had to go...like didn't have time for another surprise project had to go today kinda deal. We knew we wanted to use a barrel for larger water capacity but needed a way to put a lid on it. Farmer Dave saw a hack on the internet that if you cut the lid off a barrel and flip it over, it creates a loose fitting top that will stay in place but is also removable for things like adding a bucket de-icer in the winter and cleaning access. Also, the screw in plugs work when it's flipped upside down so you can simply unscrew the plug to fill it with a hose. If you're looking for a high volume poultry waterer upgrade, this is it! Bonus...it only took about an hour to make!

Chelsea asked if she could take ownership of the raised garden this year and I happily relinquished the task. She required very little guidance from start to finish and did a great job working independently. She learned how to properly plant tomatoes with the "hairy" stem buried horizontally in the ground in order to develop a strong root system. We look forward to enjoying the fruits of her labor this season.

I'm a little behind updating but wanted to share that our spring chickens have been moved out of their brooders and happily enjoying pasture for the last week (by a little behind posting...I mean really behind 🫣)! This video shows one of the tractors we use for our pastured poultry. As they continue to grow, we will move some from this tractor and some from our other tractor into a third one so they have plenty of space and less competition for fresh forage.

Why does our chicken taste so good? Because we don't cut corners. We don't push limits. We put the animal above profits. And that's the Roberts Family Farm difference πŸ˜‰

2026 is already off to an amazing start. We had the best of intentions to open up pre-orders to new customers for June, however, our repeat customers showed up BIG for us. We are officially SOLD OUT FOR JUNE πŸ™ŒπŸΌ

So here's the plan...
We are going to start taking orders for AUGUST.
If you place a pre-order for August and we end up having any extra June chicken (we leave some wiggle room to make sure we don't over promise and under deliver), you will have first dibs.

⁉️ WHO WANTS A FREE CHICKEN ⁉️

We are focusing on expanding our incredible customer base this year...which means, WE NEED YOUR HELP! For every person you refer to us that places a minimum 2 chicken order, you'll be entered into a raffle. Once we sell 100 chickens for August (doesn't have to be new customers only...your orders count towards the total too!), we will draw a winner. The winner will receive one free whole chicken and 2 dozen eggs!

Are you one of our loyal customers that love us and our premium poultry? LEAVE US A REVIEW! People want to hear from YOU!

Our family can't thank everyone enough for supporting our small farm that's doing big things β™₯️ As always, remember to like, share, and comment on our posts!

If happiness could be delivered in a box, I'm πŸ’― sure this is what it looks like πŸ₯ We raise HUNDREDS of chickens every year and every time it still feels like Christmas. They're so soft, so fluffy, and so very loud!

A quick story... apparently our local post office is closed for repairs (someone decided to park their car inside of it 😳) so I had to go to the one in town to get our birds. I always enjoy talking with our local postal worker about our chickens (she gets a lot of joy from the little fluffs of cuteness too) and farm when I go to pick them up so I was pretty disappointed to find out I wouldn't be seeing her today...except to my surprise she came around the corner at the loading dock and said "I thought that was you!" We had our usual quick chat and off I went with my birds. Every part of raising these birds matters to us. The relationships we build with people, the quality of life we give our animals, and producing premium quality meat from a farmer they can trust. We are looking forward to a great season ahead!

A little update from the farm 😬

The not so good...

High winds last week wreaked some havoc on the barn...the wind gusts lifted it up like a sail and moved it about a foot 😳 Photos below of the damage. The summer upgrade projects we had planned have officially been converted into barn repair and proper anchoring. Prior to this we were managing a frozen water line for nearly 2 months. It finally thawed the day before we left on vacation. To say we are looking forward to warmer (and hopefully less windy) days ahead would be an understatement.

The good...

Our piggies went to market last month and the quality was outstanding. All of our customers were very happy πŸ™ŒπŸΌ The bacon and pork chops are absolutely delicious πŸ˜‹

We brought home some new little babies to the farm last night. The kids love when the chicks arrive and this little bunch is pretty adorable. David and Chelsea called dibs holding them on the way home and Emily got to put them in the brooder all by herself. The kids learned about brooder temperature and how heat requirements change as the chicks feather out. We have had a ridiculously difficult time with our current batch of egg laying hens and it's time to switch some things up starting with the breed. These chicks are all black s*x link and are known for their friendly disposition and prolific egg supply. I'll keep yinz posted on our experience with them.

Meat chickens are set to arrive in April and with early pre-orders coming in, we are already almost sold out! Stay tuned for how many we have available...they will go fast so if you want on the reservation list, message me soon!

More farm fun is on the horizon. We are thankful for every one of you that follows and supports our family!

On today's edition of how cold is the farm...

This was after 10 minutes at -15 degrees!

Although my hair was dry, apparently the moisture from my breath stuck to it and it froze instantly...and so did my nostrils 😳🀣🫣

On a thankful note, Farmer Dave's no freeze spigot hasn't froze yet! What a life saver that has been!

School: Cancelled! It's too cold to be outside!
Farm kids: Gonna need the scarf today mom πŸ˜‰

Record low (-6 πŸ₯Ά) on the farm today and not a single complaint from this kiddo who knows our animals rely on us to take care of them no matter what mother nature throws at us.

Farm kids are just built differently not because they want to be but because they have to be. The best part is they do not resent it. They lean into it. They see that early mornings and tough days are no match for them. It creates a sense of accomplishment and instills perseverance that only farm life can.

In all things, good and bad, we give thanks. Stay warm my friends!
