This week’s featured items are some of the best rainbow Swiss chard and mild Walla Walla onions we’ve had in a few years. The chard is simply spectacular and so delicious sautéed in butter and garlic. The Walla Wallas are enormous and so mild you can bite into one like an apple, the quintessential onion for slapping a thick raw slice onto a juicy burger fresh off the grill.

Of course, we also have all the summer favorites. Huge beefsteak tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, head lettuce, cukes, cabbage, carrots, scallions and hundreds of pounds of beautiful zucchini and yellow summer squash. Plus plenty of stunning squash blossoms to stuff and fry for a special summer treat.

Come see us today at the Saratoga Farmers Market at High Rock park from 9-1, and at the Schenectady Greenmarket by city hall on Sunday from 10-2.

On a small farm like ours no space is wasted. Even the areas between our greenhouses get filled with thousands of plants. Here’s a few shots of tomatoes, peppers, celery, Swiss chard, fennel, escarole, radicchio, and four types of melons we grow. It’s all part of our effort to produce as much high quality food as we can on as little land as possible.

Potatoes are doing great in a new spot this year. They're waist high and flowering already. We should be able to begin harvesting a few new potatoes in about a month. We will wait until the vines die off to harvest the main crop. Hoping to get up to 2000 pounds from this patch of nine different specialty varieties:

German Butterball - Heirloom potato renowned for its flavor
Nicola - Lowest potato on the glycemic index
Baltic Rose - Red skin, yellow flesh, chef's choice
Peter Wilcox - Purple skin, yellow flesh, high in vitamin C
Purple Majesty - Deep purple skin and flesh, high in antioxidants
Natascha - Like Yukon Gold only better
Adirondack Red - Red skin, flesh tinged with red streaks
Upstate Abundance - Premier boiler, chef's delight
Dark Norland Red - Red skin, white flesh

We hope we have your favorite tater come harvest time, but this selection will definitely delight most potato lovers.

Great gardens start with great bedding plants. Whether you start your own plants from seed or purchase them from a commercial nursery, a vegetable plant will perform its best if it is placed into the ground as a sturdy, healthy plant with strong roots.

This won't be the case if you are purchasing cheap multi-pack tomato, pepper, eggplant and squash plants from the big box stores, grown in tiny cells and kept small with growth inhibitors until they become root bound and sickly.

All of our plants start out as seeds grown in small cells, but as soon as they can be transplanted without disturbing their roots we pot them up into big 4" containers filled with a rich blend of high quality potting mix and our own special organic fertilizers.

Stop by and talk to us here at the farm. We can show you exactly how to get results like we get in our our greenhouses. We still have hundreds of beautiful bedding plants ready for your garden plot. It's going to be a great week for gardening, so let us get you started.

It was a cold and rainy day at the Schenectady Greenmarket but our Schenectady peeps came out for us and we delivered. We started out loaded to the gills with fresh spring greens and bedding plants and by market’s end we didn’t have much to bring home. All in all, an incredible day despite the dismal weather.

Come see us at the Schenectady Greenmarket today (Sunday) from 10-2. It’s going to be a rainy day, but we’ll be there!
