This photo is only glamorous to flower farmers- these are all my empty buckets after an amazing day Troy Waterfront Farmers Market . I slept three hours last night because I was so busy bunching and wrapping hundreds of bouquets and straight bunches after hosting 60 people at a farm dinner and tour Thursday, then recording a podcast interview Friday morning with the inspiring co founder and director of the Real Organic Project - Dave Chapman. Phew! It was a whirlwind of a week, full of cooking and farming, but I wouldn’t change it for anything.

If you haven’t tuned into the Real Organic podcast yet, you’re missing out on some really intellectual organic farm wisdom that will truly open your eyes to the importance of Real Organic food. I’m so honored that Dave made the drive down from his farm in Vermont to hang out with us and celebrate the Real Organic movement, and I’m equally honored to be interviewed by him for The Real Organic podcast. He is a treasure trove of stories from the frontlines of the organic movement, and he’s interviewed so many of the greatest thinkers on the subject of real organic farming. We talk a lot about women in agriculture, a bit about my history and growing practices, and about my book (Microgreens and Shoots- coming out this fall and currently available for pre order!) and being one of the few female authors in the vegetable production space.

So it was a huge relief to sell so many flowers after the crazy week and the sleep deprivation. Thanks a million to all our wonderful customers. You all make this wild farming life possible. Love you all!

PS if you want to learn how to grow microgreens my book is available to prebuy right now! My prayer is that it inspires folks in the “dreaming” phase of starting their farm to start growing microgreens - since no land is required- and for established farmers to find a crop enterprise that brings in steady, weekly, year round cash flow. 💚🌱

The farm is looking so beautiful, and we have an epic feast planned of super fresh, farm to table food, and Dave Chapman, co- director of the Real Organic Project is our keynote speaker. Can’t wait to welcome everyone to the farm. (FYI This is a ticketed event)

I'm so excited to announce that my book, Microgreens and Shoots, is available for prebuy. Check the link in the bio and below! This is one of the few market farming books focusing on vegetables written by a woman, and the first bonafide book written on microgreens. Pre buy orders mean the world to me and are an important way to get my book on the charts.

My greatest intention with this book is to support beginning and established farmers with detailed "how-to" instructions for growing microgreens and shoots as a profitable crop enterprise on their diversified farms. Microgreens bring in consistent cash flow year round on my farm. They have truly become a backbone crop that allowed us to grow and keep our employees on year round.

To be perfectly honest, I made fun of microgreens when we started growing them, labeling them "rich people food," and I swore I would only grow them to gain entry into competitive markets in Upstate New York. Oh, how we eat our judgemental and critical words! I started to change my mind when my picky nephews started chowing on sunflower shoots and I started to feel incredible rushes of energy after eating an ounce or two of microgreens in one sitting. Then, when I had loyal customers showing up to market each week to buy my microgreens, I realized there was more to microgreens than I first thought.

Now, my farm brings in an average of $1300 a week in microgreen sales from just 100 square feet of space in our propagation greenhouse.

If you've ever considered adding microgreens and shoots as an enterprise on your farm, this book will show you all the ins and outs, from seed selection, trays and soil, harvesting and marketing, troubleshooting disease and pest issues, and handling leftovers.

If you are a home gardener interested in learning how to grow microgreens, this book will also be applicable to you! Microgreens are the perfect way to get a start gardening or farming even if you live in an apartment and have no land access.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to share some detailed knowledge on a crop that has been an important part of my farm thriving!

Bumble bee magic in the snapdragon house. If you could smell this house- the stocks plus snapdragons give the most delicious cinnamon spice bubblegum root beer scent that is absolutely divine. And cute pollinators make it a total dream to walk through. Pinching myself- is this really my job? Is this really my home??

Spring is such a magical time in the farm. I have this wellspring of bubbling over hope and anticipation for the coming season. I used to dread spring- before we had ample employees, the work load fell 1000% on Matthew and I. We regularly worked 15 hour days, 7 days a week, while parenting small children. Now, two of our kids are adults working full time in the farm, plus 8 other crew members to help shoulder the burden, and the farm has never been this dialed in for end of May.

Also, isn’t this checkerboard poppy just a stunner? We’re growing them for seed pods.
