💧 New Water Well Drilling Licensure Requirements Took Effect July 1, 2026
Louisiana law now requires an appropriate contractor license and classification for water well drilling work valued at $1 or more.
The requirement applies not only to performing the work, but also to advertising, soliciting, bidding, quoting, estimating, supervising, directing, or overseeing work involving a water well or environmental well or hole.
Water well drilling includes:
• Drilling and constructing water wells
• Maintaining and repairing wells
• Abandoning, plugging, or sealing wells
• Work involving potable or nonpotable groundwater
Water well and environmental well or hole contractors must also:
✅ Pass the appropriate examination
✅ Register with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors
✅ Remain in good standing with the Louisiana Department of Conservation and Energy
✅ Maintain the required well registration
✅ Complete five hours of Board approved continuing education each year
These requirements help ensure that Louisiana’s water well drilling work is performed by properly qualified and licensed professionals.
