FREE SAMPLES OF BIRCH BREW! This double-fermented bubbly drink is made here in, Talkeetna (the birch trees), Palmer (the bottling) and Anchorage - where Ted and his family live when they aren’t climbing birch trees :) Ted stopped by today and gave us some free samples of the new flavors (all unsweetened, as the sugars used for the fermentation process and bubbles are completely converted in the double-fermentation process!). So if you’re shopping with his today, stop by the window counter for a sample - while supplies last :)

TRANSPARENCY TUESDAY: Why isn’t ALL of our produce “usda certified organic?” Well, to clarify - all of our produce grown outside of Alaska IS indeed certified organic. But at least half of our produce is Alaska grown, sometimes by very small farmers, and they do not always have the capacity to pay for the USDA certification. So, we get to know our farmers and we ask them what their practices are - the majority of them use “organic and permaculture practices” on their farms. We LOVE that they are transparent with us, and so we are being transparent with you. We are working on featuring each of our local farmers with a write up posted online and also on our “Featured Farmers” board here in the store. We find out how they farm and the practices they use, and most of our farmers do indeed use “organic and permaculture practices.”

Lettuce mix has been a hot debate for many of us the last couple of weeks, and even with the abundant growing season, sometimes our gardens can’t always fill our weekly (or daily) salad fix!

Luckily, by buying our lettuce mix you can skip the salad scaries by supporting our very own City Farms, an Anchorage local hydroponic farm! Customers do not need to worry about their lettuce being contaminated, as they do not have any kind of animal, surface water, or soil pathogen that could contact the lettuce since they grow fully indoors. From the time it is seeded to the time it is harvested, the only thing that touches it is a person with washed hands and gloves.

This lettuce mix is delightfully light, and so fresh that it’s even good all on its own- though we do have some Mosquito Mama balsamic dressing that is oh so tasty on it!

WHY WE DO IT: Alaskan Farmers! This week we are featuring chickadeefarms_ak Chickadee Farms, based here in Anchorage and also in the valley, is one of our main Alaskan farmers who supply us with produce and flowers - it’s like a ray of sunshine when these two come into the store with their beautiful veggies and flowers and giggles! Here’s a little bit about them:

“We’re a family owned micro farm growing heirloom vegetables, berries, and flowers, using organic and permaculture practices. We are run by three generations of women and grow in midtown Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley. My biggest helpers are my 5 year old daughter who collects eggs and pulls weeds and my 87 year old mother in law who shares her knowledge of flowers and growing vegetables in the far north. My husband is the photographer and often takes bedtime duties so I can get farm chores done after a day in clinic! We love selling local produce and building community. Our work is about health, connection, community, and real food-which is medicine for the soul. Our veggies are for sale Blue Market AK, we’ll deliver fresh eggs in Anchorage and we are scaling up made to order bouquets. Reach out if you would like to be in touch!”
