Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Snack: Mandarins! 🍊
Sweet, seedless, and bursting with flavor, mandarins are the perfect bite-sized boost for students on the go! They’re loaded with vitamin C to fight off colds, fiber for happy tummies, and folate to keep brains focused and alert.

✨ Cool fact: Mandarins were once considered a luxury fruit in ancient China and were given as gifts to symbolize good fortune and happiness — that’s how they got their royal name!

👉 FFVP snacks are served during the school day at participating elementary schools, giving students a chance to taste fun new fruits and veggies while learning about healthy eating.
👉 Ask your student if they tried today’s mandarin! Did they share a slice of “good luck” with a friend?

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Snack: Gala Apples! 🍎
Crisp, sweet, and full of flavor, Gala apples are a student favorite! They’re packed with vitamin C for a healthy immune system, fiber for good digestion, and antioxidants that help keep bodies strong and energized.

✨ Cool fact: Gala apples were first grown in New Zealand in the 1930s — a cross between Kidd’s Orange Red and Golden Delicious apples! Their bright red-and-yellow color makes them one of the most popular apple varieties in the world.

👉 FFVP snacks are served during the school day at participating elementary schools, giving students a chance to taste fun new fruits and veggies while learning about healthy eating.
👉 Ask your student if they tried today’s Gala apple! Did they like the crisp crunch or the sweet flavor best?

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Snack: Navel Oranges! 🍊
Sweet, juicy, and easy to peel, navel oranges are packed with vitamin C for strong immune systems, fiber for healthy digestion, and folate for brain and cell health.

✨ Cool fact: The navel orange has a fascinating origin story — it began as a natural mutation on a sour orange tree in a Brazilian monastery in the 1800s! The mutation caused a second tiny orange to grow inside the first one, creating the little “belly button” you see on the bottom — and that’s why navel oranges are seedless!
Even cooler? Because they can’t grow from seeds, every navel orange in the world today is a clone of that original tree.

👉 FFVP snacks are served during the school day at participating elementary schools, giving students a chance to taste fun new fruits and veggies while learning about healthy eating.
👉 Ask your student if they tried today’s navel orange! Did they spot the tiny “belly button”?

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Snack: Bananas! 🍌
Bananas are a naturally sweet, energy-boosting snack that keeps students fueled for learning and play! They’re full of potassium for strong muscles, vitamin C for immunity, and fiber for healthy digestion.

✨ Cool fact: Bananas are curved because they grow toward the sunlight! As they develop, they bend upward — a process called negative geotropism. 🌞🍌

👉 FFVP snacks are served during the school day at participating elementary schools, giving students a chance to taste fun new fruits and veggies while learning about healthy eating.
👉 Ask your student if they tried today’s banana! Did they notice how perfectly snack-sized it is?

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Snack: Blood Oranges! 🍊
Don’t be fooled by their plain orange peel — inside, blood oranges have a deep red color and a sweet, berry-like flavor. They’re packed with vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants that support healthy skin, strong immunity, and heart health.

✨ Cool fact: The red color in blood oranges comes from natural pigments called anthocyanins, which only develop when the fruit grows in cooler night temperatures. 🌙❄️

👉 FFVP snacks are served during the school day at participating elementary schools, giving students a chance to taste fun new fruits and veggies while learning about healthy eating.
👉 Ask your student if they tried today’s blood orange! Did they notice the ruby-red color inside?

Big News from Ursa Minor Elementary! 🍽️🐻

This week, Ursa Minor Elementary successfully transitioned to traditional meal service, and it couldn’t have gone better!

Students adapted quickly, enjoyed having more choice, and the excitement in the café was contagious. Staff and students alike were thrilled to see the new setup in action — and it ran smoothly from start to finish! 💜

A huge thank-you to Aspasija, our Area Supervisor for jumping in to help Café Manager Candice on the line — and kudos to Candice, who absolutely nailed it! She served just over 90 students per lunch and cleared the line in under 15 minutes — an incredible achievement for the very first day of traditional service! 👏

This positive change means more student choice, less waste, and a more engaging mealtime experience for everyone at Ursa Minor.

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Snack: Granny Smith Apples! 🍏
Crisp, tart, and refreshing, Granny Smith apples are a classic fall favorite. They’re packed with vitamin C for immune support, fiber for healthy digestion, and potassium for heart health.

✨ Cool fact: Granny Smith apples are one of the few apple varieties that stay bright green even when fully ripe — making them easy to spot in a basket of apples! 🍎🍏

👉 FFVP snacks are served during the school day at participating elementary schools, giving students a chance to taste fun new fruits and veggies while learning about healthy eating.
👉 Ask your student if they tried today’s Granny Smith apple! Did they like the tart flavor?

Exciting News from Alaska Native Cultural Charter School! 🍽️🌟

This week, Alaska Native Cultural Charter School made the transition from prepackaged meals to traditional meal service—and what an amazing start it’s been! 🙌

Students were thrilled to line up, choose their own foods, and enjoy freshly served meals right in the café. Staff did a wonderful job making the change smooth, efficient, and fun for everyone. 💜

Traditional service comes with so many benefits:
✅ More choices for students
✅ Less plastic and packaging waste
✅ Reduced food waste — students take only what they’ll eat
✅ Increased meal participation and excitement at lunchtime!

Way to go to the ANCCS café team and school community for embracing this positive change that nourishes both students and the planet.

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Snack: Golden Kiwis!
Golden kiwis are smooth-skinned and sweeter than the green ones — full of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber to keep students strong and energized.

✨ Cool fact: You can eat the skin! Golden kiwis have a thinner, fuzz-free skin that’s completely edible. Be brave and try it — it’s packed with extra fiber and nutrients.

👉 FFVP snacks are served during the school day at participating elementary schools, giving students a chance to taste fun new fruits and veggies while learning about healthy eating.
👉 Ask your student if they tried today’s golden kiwi! Did they taste it with or without the skin?
