CHIEF PRESENTS PROGRAM ON FRAUD

It was the investigation into a case in which a woman almost lost her home because she had been convinced to send her mortgage payment to a different address that prompted Andalusia Police Chief Paul Hudson’s recent round of speaking engagements to discuss fraud.

Hudson spoke at First Methodist Church Tuesday morning and to the Andalusia Rotary Club at noon.

“This lady was about to have her house repossessed,” he said. “She had proof she had been making payments, she had just been scammed for two years.”

Hudson’s message is simple: If it sounds too good to be true, be suspicious.

“There’s a telephone scam in which someone says they are with the U.S. Marshals and have a warrant for your arrest,” he said. “That’s a scam. If the Marshals are looking for you, they’re going to knock on your door and put you in a nice set of bracelets.”

Other frequent scams are notifications that a person has won money from Publishers’ Clearing House, but needs to send money before they can get receive theirs, he said.
“Everything looks so real with the use of AI, he said. “If you use your computer for banking, and click on a link in an email scam, the scammers have access to your banking information. And the sad truth is that we can never get your money back.”

Most of the scammed funds end up in overseas accounts, he said.

“Unfortunately, a lot of elderly people don’t believe it’s a scam,” he said. “We’ve had some victims lose $20,000, $30,000, or $40,000. And we can’t get it back.”

Hudson advised people who are approached by phone to ask for a number and tell the caller they will have to call them back.

“If they can’t give you a number, it’s more than likely it’s a scam,” he said.

He encouraged residents to talk to their older friends and neighbors about scams, and to carefully watch bank accounts and credit card charges.

2 INJURED IN ATV WRECK

The Andalusia Police Department is currently investigating an accident that occurred on South Cotton Street at about 6:15 this evening.

Capt. Brett Holmes said two juveniles were riding an ATV on South Cotton Street when the ATV left the road and hit a tree.

The APD and Advanced EMS responded to the accident.

Both juveniles were taken to Andalusia Health, and one is being transferred by air ambulance to another facility.

Police Chief Paul Hudson reminds residents that vehicles that are not street legal should not be used on city streets, for the safety of all concerned.

7:30 am update, Saturday

Our electric utilities report this morning that only about 72 customers lost power last night as a result of the storm. Half of those have had power restored since crews went to work this morning, and we expect to have everybody back on by mid-afternoon.

It is believed that a recent right-of-way clearing project helped to protect the city’s system. Shout out to the Utilities Board for their commitment to this maintenance.

Thank you to the linemen here and everywhere who are helping get things back to normal. Our prayers for those all around us who were not as lucky.

Please stay safe out there, and be respectful of those working to make sure we all have power fully restored.

Mayor Earl Johnson has called our utilities crews in.

The crews will be ready to respond as soon as it is safe for them to do so, but for now, if the power goes out, it will remain out until the storm passes.

If your power is out, it is not necessary to call, as we are automatically alerted. We would appreciate reports of downed lines.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but our goal is to keep everyone safe.

Please continue to shelter in place, and stay away from downed lines.

The most recent updates from the EMA show Hurricane Isaias, currently a Category 3 storm, shifting to the east. The storm is projected to come ashore somewhere between Pensacola Beach and Santa Rosa Beach.

Covington County remains under a hurricane warning. Areas to our east are already under a tornado watch.

Local residents are encouraged to do all that they can to prepare, and to check on their neighbors.

Tornados, falling trees, and power outages are expected. If you need to take cover, the City of Andalusia has opened a shelter inside the Andalusia Junior High School located at 408 4th Avenue. Residents who plan to shelter there need to move before the weather intensifies.

• If you go to the shelter, please take your own blankets, air mattresses, food and medications. Pets are not allowed. Weapons are not allowed.

Meanwhile, if you have not already done so, make sure that you have your devices charged and a way to receive emergency information. Have flashlights handy.

Take the opportunity to secure furniture, flower pots, and other outdoor items that could become flying projectiles as winds move into our area.

In the event of power outages in the City of Andalusia, our crews will be ready to begin repairs as soon as it is safe for them to do so. There is no need to call to report outages, as our system alerts us to outages. You only need to call us at 334-222-1332 to report downed lines. We have additional crews here through Electric Cities to help us with restoration.

City maintenance crews and first responders are working to ensure that we are as prepared as possible for the effects of the storm.

As the weather deteriorates, residents are urged to shelter in place.

Please watch our social media, and listen to local broadcasts for the most up-to-date information.
