Happy Thursday!
This weekend is our next plant sale at 5850 Rosslyn Ave. Saturday and Sunday 9am-4pm.
These are also available for farm pickup in Anderson, just message me to coordinate.
I am potting up lots more plants for the sale this weekend and wanted to gauge some interest. These will be available for pickup starting Saturday morning for the plant sale and can be held with pre-payment for pickup later. Photos of plants that will be available over the weekend and more.
Natives -
1) Grey-headed coneflower (Ratibida pinnata) is an excellent, low-maintenance native perennial for sunny, dry, or clay-heavy areas. It offers long-lasting, bright yellow blooms that attract a wide variety of pollinators, provides essential winter food for birds, and helps prevent erosion, making it perfect for native gardens.
Here is why you should consider growing Grey-headed coneflower:
Valuable Pollinator Support: The flowers are magnet for native bees, including sweat bees and bumble bees, as well as butterflies.
Wildlife and Songbird Food: Goldfinches and other songbirds love the seeds, often visiting in late summer and autumn.
Easy to Grow and Tough: It is incredibly hardy and adaptable, thriving in full sun, poor soil, and even heavy clay. It is highly drought-tolerant once established.
Long-Lasting Blooms: The bright yellow, drooping petals often bloom for over four weeks, bringing color to gardens from mid-summer through early fall.
These are $8-$12 for one-gallon and larger pots
2) Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea) is an excellent native perennial to grow for early-season color, high-impact pollinator support, and low-maintenance beauty. It is highly valued as a top host plant for Black Swallowtail caterpillars, a nectar source for beneficial insects, and a hardy filler for sunny or part-shade gardens.
Here is why you should grow Golden Alexander:
1. Superior Pollinator and Wildlife Support
Essential Host Plant: It is a primary larval host for the Black Swallowtail and Ozark Swallowtail butterflies, meaning you will likely see caterpillars on the plants.
Early-Season Nectar: It blooms in late spring to early summer, providing a crucial early food source for bees, butterflies, wasps, and predatory insects.
Pollinator Magnet: It attracts a wide variety of insects, including short-tongued bees, beetles, and mining bees (such as Andrena ziziae)
These are $8-$15 for one-gallon and larger pots
3)Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium) is grown primarily as a high-value pollinator magnet, providing vital nectar and pollen to a diverse range of bees, wasps, and butterflies. It is a striking, low-maintenance native perennial with unique, architectural, silvery-green spiky foliage and globe-shaped, white flower heads that offer dramatic texture in sunny gardens.
Key Reasons to Grow Rattlesnake Master:
Pollinator Powerhouse: It is a major attractor for beneficial insects, including specialized wasps, flies, moths, beetles, and long-tongued bees. It is also the exclusive host plant for the Rattlesnake Master Borer Moth (Papaipema eryngii), supporting this threatened species.
Unique Aesthetic: The plant offers a sculptural, "architectural" look, with spiky, yucca-like leaves and thistle-like flower heads that create a dramatic contrast to soft-leaved plants, making it a great accent or focal point.
Drought Tolerant & Tough: With a deep taproot, it is highly drought-tolerant once established and thrives in dry, lean, or rocky soils, requiring very little maintenance.
Versatile Habitat Adaptability: It is highly adaptable to various conditions, including clay soils, and can even handle moist to wet sites.
Year-Round Interest: The plant provides architectural structure in the summer and holds its form well into the winter, offering visual interest when left standing
These are $8-$15 for one-gallon and larger pots
