During this time period most often milkshakes were mixed by hand or with a simple crank mixer, and the ice came from the icehouse. Compared to today's milkshakes, early creations were made with Milk+Ice+Sugar or Syrup. Picture this: A slightly frothy, lightly creamy drink in a simple glass, maybe sweating from the ice, sitting on a wooden counter - less dessert, more refreshing treat.

The articles we found in the Walnut Valley Times about Mr. Kritzer, gave us an opportunity to think about the difference at the time of his early milkshakes and a week later, his ice cream. What we found was the ice cream was hand cranked with cream (instead of milk) in a freezer type container packed with ice and salt creating a delicious treat you slowly ate with a spoon. Many articles from the late 1800's Andover talk about these treats being wagers for bets and competition prizes. But, historically, ice cream didn't become much of a standard until after 1900. Andover was ahead of the trends, as usual!

To make your weekend even sweeter, Cuppa Yo - Andover, KS and Andover United Methodist Church will be serving up some cold treats at HeritageFest this weekend! Andover has been building community connections around frozen treats for over 150 years. See you there, Andover!
