My cat just had her first litter, and I'm getting a little worried about her behavior.
Normally she's extremely independent and doesn't really enjoy attention or affection. As she got close to giving birth, though, she became incredibly clingy. She wouldn't stay in the nesting area I set up for her and would sit at the door crying, reaching her paws underneath it, and scratching until I came back.
The night she went into labor, she refused to settle down unless I lay next to her. This is a cat that never sleeps with me, but she curled up against me and stayed there all night. When I woke up, she was in the same position—except now there was a newborn kitten tucked in beside her. She later delivered two more kittens and seems healthy otherwise.
The problem is that she now wants me right beside her constantly. If I get up and leave, she'll often leave the kittens and try to follow me. I've tried moving her and the babies into several different nesting spots I prepared, but she ignores them and just wants to be wherever I am. At one point she followed me and accidentally left two kittens behind, and they ended up falling off the bed before I noticed.
She'll usually go back to nursing and caring for them if I lie down next to her, but otherwise she seems reluctant to stay with them on her own.
Has anyone experienced this with a new mother cat? Is this normal behavior for a first-time mom, or should I be concerned? I'll need to be away from home for a few hours tomorrow, and I'm worried about how she'll do if I'm not there. Any advice would be appreciated.
