The truck stopped—but the product didn’t.

That is one of the biggest differences between driving a standard trailer and transporting thousands of gallons of liquid.

When a tanker accelerates, turns or brakes, the liquid inside continues moving. This is called liquid surge. The force can push the truck forward after braking, shift its balance during a turn and increase the distance needed to stop safely.

That is why experienced tanker drivers:

• Begin slowing down earlier
• Leave additional following distance
• Enter curves at a controlled speed
• Avoid sudden steering and hard braking
• Adjust for weather, traffic and road conditions
• Stay aware that partially filled tanks may create stronger movement

To surrounding motorists, that extra space in front of a tanker may look like an invitation to merge. To the driver, it is a carefully maintained safety zone.

The next time you’re traveling near a tanker, avoid cutting closely in front of it. That small decision gives the driver more room to protect everyone sharing the road.
